Obviously he went back to someone that he didn't want you to know about or he just didn't want to pursue a relationship with you. You never know who else they are dating or if they are married etc, it's impossible to know when it's long distance. You need to let this go because he doesn't want you to know why, and guessing will not make a difference.

It sounds like he was a bit of a coward to be honest. Better guys are out there and you will meet them so try not to worry too much.
