The guy was talking, laughing, the conversation was going really well between us and a friend, and I looked at him and he winked.
it may have some meaning his gesture? Was he flirting or something?

Winking for no reason, is probably his way of flirting, unless you said something that caused him to wink, or maybe he said something that was meant to be joke, so he winked to indicate so.

The guy at the supermarket checkout winked at me the other day after we chatted. He was about 20 and I'm mid 40's. It was just his way - he's not flirting, nor does the wink mean interest in me.

Guy who worked at bike shop winked at me when talked with me. Outside of work when I said Hi to him he winked too - that was just the way he interacted with people.
