Guy friend says he likes me but...PLZZZ HELP :(

Hi guys im new here.anyway,me and (the guy i like) ted are both 20 yr old,in college.my parents don't allow me to date anyone,NEITHER HIS(society and religious reasons.)but i have been in a relationship with Neil who was abusive so i broke up with him last year,it ended badly after breakup ted(mutual friend) became more close friend to me but then he disappeared for months.Now he reappeared and is still a good friend & was sweet to me but started flirting with me,complimenting me & finally said "i likes u" & from then he said that many times(7 times)but i never said back to him,although once i said "i used to like you before but i thought you were just flirting".anyway "few days later he said"i was going to propose you(to be his gf)but then i thought i don't want to disappoint your family and you".After that he is hot and cold.one side he is always sweet to me,compliments me on my nature,my hair,my clothes,you are so beautiful.etc my hair ,texts first & daily.other side he (2 times ) disappeared for weeks,act criticizing like lose weight,don't apply make up,don't wear high heels or hairbands,the way i walk,etc.both times after reappearing he apologized as i tell him he did wrong and said and last time he also said"why should i forget/ignore you? no never ever in my life for God sake! i like u dear,i missed you etc".last night he text (like always)- "i know im not permitted to say this but i think like m talking to my gf".
So i directly asked him is our families the reason which is holding us back.
he answered yes with smiley.
i said "i can handle mine".
he replied "not to worry about my parents,they are not problem for me." but after that he disappeared .i feel like i scared him off by asking him directly and m scared i ruined our friendship..have i done right by asking him ?

I don't know what the cultural norms are where you are from but if he's being respectful of the parents wishes on both sides that you don't date, that has to be a good thing. I don't think you scared him off. Men don't scare that easily but dial it back & let him come to you.
