Is it possible to be friends with an ex?

I had a boyfriend, dated for 3 1/2 years and we decided to break up because he has obligation to take care of his parents back in his home country and he will leave the country soon. I cannot go with him since I have my family here. We decided to separate and tried to be BFF from now on. Is it good idea to keep him as a BFF since he is such a good friend? Please assist..

It is different from person to person. I am terrible with being friends with exes because I am very emotional, so I am normally either still weirdly into them or bitter and shitty at them. That is just me. It is certainly possible though, I am friends with one of my exes now that I am a bit older, I think it is easier later in life (age I mean, not time) because you can let go and realise that things happen without trying to figure out who did what and who is to blame.

I say try to be friends if you can still bring something to each others' lives. People we have been with know us better than anyone else, and that is a great quality to have in a friend. You just have to make sure you don't get caught up in memories and look at them the same way you used to. You can still be special to one another, but your lives are much more separate, especially if he has a new relationship.
