Singapore has absolutely none of its own resourses, but over some few years has managed to acheive very high standards of living by means of effective trade, because the president runs the country like a company, lol.

Is it really all that cool in Singapore?

Killer, you're ignoring the fact that Singapore benefited heavily from foreign investment and economic assistance like another nation that reached economic progress under similar circumstances, Hong Kong. In fact, Singapore's economy can be best characterized as a Listian (Friedrich List) type of economy.

There's different ways of interpreting its success. Right now I'm reading a book, which I find mightly fascinating - Liberalization and its Discontents by Stiglitz. This guys works for World Bank and IMF and gives a very insightful scoop into the dark deeps behind the closed doors.

Are you sure you're reading "Liberalization and its Discontents"? Cause last I checked (I own the book and have read it) its "Globalization and its Discontents," by the 2001 Nobel Laureate in Economics Joseph E. Stiglitz. When you're done reading "Liberalization and its Discontents" you should check out "The Roaring Nineties," also by Stiggy.
