I've tried.. "Hey! How's John?" with a surprised look..then see how it happens.sadly never worked..
I usually use something like "Hi, my name is ____". Or if I'm feeling really daring I may go with "hey, how's it going?"

lol. Here's where MVP could share upon us some wisdom. Last Friday that girl used one on me. We got into a conversation and she said, "Excuse me while I get a glass of water." So I asked her to get me one too and she said, "I'll do that for you on condition. That I get your name and number by the end of the night." That wasn't too bad. Not great, but not too bad. Threw me off cause I'm not used to the female being more of the 'aggressor' at any scene.

my fav pick up line that I had to laugh at was when this guy was like...
You know something.. you look alot like my professor in college... do you teach Sex therapy?
