Seven die in California university shooting

The gunman opened fire at Oikos University, a Christian college in Oakland

Seven people have been killed and three injured in a shooting at a California college, police say.

Armed officers swarmed Oikos University in the city of Oakland after the mid-morning attack. Bodies covered with tarpaulin were laid outside.

After a huge manhunt the suspect was detained at a shopping centre in the nearby city of Alameda, police said.

Oikos University is a private religious institution offering courses in theology, music and nursing.

A police press conference is scheduled for 18:00 local time (01:00 GMT).

Witness TV footage showed wounded people emerging from buildings.

Johnna Watson, of Oakland Police, said: "We know this to be a Korean college. A gunman came in to the college and fired multiple shots."

The Oakland Fire Department says it was first notified of the shooting at about 10:50 local time.

Pastor Jong Kim, who founded the school about 10 years ago, told the Oakland Tribune that the shooter was a former nursing student at the college.

He said he had heard about 30 gunshots in the building, adding: "I stayed in my office."

"She did say someone got shot in the chest right next to her before she got taken off in an ambulance."

A woman who was doing errands nearby, Angie Johnson, told the San Francisco Chronicle she helped a woman with a gunshot wound in her arm.

The woman "had a hole in her right arm the size of a silver dollar with blood coming down", Ms Johnson told the newspaper.

Ms Johnson also said that, according to the woman, the gunman had stood up during a nursing class, shot one student in the chest at point blank range and then began firing at the rest of the room.

A police officer at the scene told reporters the gunman had not been identified.

Reports described the suspect as a Korean man in his 40s, with heavy build and wearing khaki clothes.

The shooting comes after an Ohio high school student killed three peers and injured six in February.

I hate to say it, but I can see how the stress of nursing school can push a psychologically fragile person over the edge.

what gets me is that guns are too readily available. generally speaking, if a guy goes berserk with a knife he can do much less damage.

All sarcasm aside, the right to keep and bear arms cannot be infringed upon by way of the US Constitution (even though it already is thanks to unconstitutional, unrepealed legislation, such as in Chicago, or any other liberal craptown or state). However you feel about this is legally irrelevant

America is culturally militant. It engages in the most oversea wars. Even its constitution guarantees the right to firearms. Taking away their right to firearms will only help temporarily before people start getting theit hands on them illegally. The problem is values.

Shootings always get the most attention, but more victims are murdered with knives and blunt objects than any other weapon. It's absurd to think that a knife can do less damage than a gun. They are just as potentially fatal, they are much more widely available, and it's much easier to get one because there's not much legislation to regulate or control it.

I hate it, too, but banning weapons is not going to eliminate violence. Ever. The only way you can do that is to uphold multicultural values and respect for the individual, and promote post-conventional moral thinking.

that's not the correct comparison. the question is number of victims per lunatic. if you replace all the knife crime weapons with guns, there will be many, many more victims, many, many more fatalities.

banning guns will not eliminate violence but it will reduce the impact per incident and very likely the number of incidences as well.

Wrong. I can guarantee that if I went into a crowd with the knife of my choice and the intention to commit multiple murders, my body count'd be much higher than merely six. Guns (thanks to movies) give a false sense of god-like power. We "know" that if you shoot someone, they die, usually instantly. Due to this, poorly trained individuals with a firearm do less damage than they think they will.

It's statistically demonstrable that states with liberal gun control laws have lower crime rates. Guns are so prevalent in our society that outlawing them will have zero effect on the criminal population - they're law breakers by definition. The only effect you'll have is to take defensive weaponry out of the hands of those that obey the law.

He's probably assuming the 'crowd' to be at fat camp.

But anyways, if gun use had any safety logic to it you'd expect that someone would have a gun to fend off the guy, but alas, error 404.

How me or anyone else "feels" about gun ownership is irrelevant. The founders of my country thought it was important enough to be guaranteed in our Constitution and that is that.

If you want to change gun ownership rights in America, then change the Constitution
