I feel like far too many people jump into college right after highschool because of all the societal pressure.Quote:

Sorry, when you're dumping so much money into an education, you better f*ckin' know why you're going. The whole "I'll figure it out by the end of freshman year", is stupid.
I know too many people who graduated and wish they had taken different courses now that they've started working.
That is usually because they picked a "fun" major and they can't find work in a related field.Quote:

I think this thread is more about Gwen Stefani than it is about school
Or they picked something that isn't easy to get into and wound up having to work in retail to start paying off their loans.Quote:

Or because it's hard to get into that field, they continue to live with their parents while they "wait" for something to come to them.
I will by no means push my kids into college.
I never would have gone to college to start working in the electric field. I'd say it's better to match school to your needs than to match work to your diploma.

I agree. If I had to do it again, I would have taken a year off to travel more.Quote:

A lot of it is the school's themselves, tho. They pressure you to attend. I didn't know one could defer scholarships, for example.
Did any of you college folk do this? Was it valuable to you?
I'm thinking my son shouldn't go straight to college without travelling first.
Vash, what are your kids doing?
There are so many opportunities to travel while attending college, though. My college had dozens of programs in place, and in some cases it was actually cheaper to take a semester abroad than to stay on campus.
Don't remind me.Quote:

My son is going straight to University, but then again, he LOVES being a student and is not really the type to go traveling about. If he wants an adventure, he is much more likely to learn how to rock climb or kayak down the Colorado river or something (although he is planning an Israel trip with a bunch of friends during college - but that is with a group).Quote:

I'm not encouraging my daughter to travel alone. She's pretty small and kind of naiive, and I don't trust people out there to leave her alone. If she went with friends, that might be another story, and if she wants to take a year off before starting college, I don't mind that, either.
My husband's son traveled, though. He spent some time in Italy and Ireland, decided to become a Christian and moved to Turkey to try to convert the Muslims, and then he became an Orthodox Jew and moved to Jerusalem to study in the yeshiva. He would do anything he could to avoid getting a job. :P I think he has really taken the taste out of my mouth for encouraging travel, to be honest.
Travel abroad to Calabria. It was there that the concept of ownage took its current meaning
Friend of mine studied biochem. Right up until he tried to use his knowledge to make a bomb in his dorm and got thrown out of college...
