Death of the stick shift?

Come on guys though, the numbers are not surprising as since the 80's the increase in SUVs and VANs has also increased...those are really weird in manual and thus they are auto..and since they make up most of the transportation on the streets that is why auto is dominating. most people who get a sports car in auto simply are afraid of manual.

FALSE. 90% of the sequential transmission ARE AUTO. Who said I was talking about the crappy auto's with shifting paddles? I agree with you on this...my mom has an Acura Tl type S. It has an option where you can put it into a manual shifting mode. It's slow as hell at shifting and frustrating as hell.

I'm sure you've seen f1 cars...it's practically instant shifting.

Exactly...only autos that are really for drag purposes which usually have high stall torque converters as well, can really hold it's own against a manual.

My bad than, I agree with that. I must have miss-understood it. I have yet to see a good daily driver auto that is faster than an MT that I would want though.

I used to do this on our old toyota corolla when we were students. It requires knowing, or being able to hear, what rpm your engine is at & knowing what gear to be changing it to. After a while you start to get a feel for it. If you are the sort where the car 'lunges' after the gear change (w/clutch) then I wouldn't recommend it.

You will destroy the syncros on the transmission. You can tell when people have done this on their cars when you get a older car and the shifter feels really loose in the boot and you can barely tell what gear you are in.

This has been my experience. I drive a sporty Mazda & I've been able to accelerate better than automatic cars with bigger engines from a red light. I know its also the weight, but the manual TM helps. :D

iv driven paddles.. not fun. rather boring.
manuals r fun.
plus the trannys are easier. if it breaks its much easier to fix than an auto. and paddles dont seem like it would be easy to fix either.

It's nice to have a standard tranny where it's icy- you need to be in a really low gear to get up hills sometimes. Otherwise, it's just a drag. I'm a lazy ass and I now drive an automatic for the first time in my life.

I say we converge this thread with CB's thread, and we can call it "Charlieboy: Lunging for the tranny"

A properly built Auto will outrun the fastest manual shifter in the world.. Same exact car, same mods, properly built auto wins 100% of the time and can easily be streetable..

I'm sure that's a wonderful reason to get an automatic.

It isn't the same car now if you built the auto but not the manual is it? How many people are driving around with built autos?. You are never gonna take off the line like me in the same car unless it is an extremely aggressive auto with a torque converter. No more nice luxury auto anymore than anyways. Also cheaper to replace a clutch than an entire tranny. Now that is drag racing but in auto X and circuit racing any driver can see the benefit of the manual as I would hate on an exit of a corner for a stupid computer down shifting to early for me. That would really suck. Only some F1 transmissions work decent on a circuit race compared to the manual counter part.

Power for power no you won't. If your car is much faster than the transmission isn't even the argument or issue.
