well i'm glad you talked it out with her, probably the smartest thing you could do. only thing i would say to that though, is if you come out and ask someone "are you saying this to just keep me around", it's not like she's going to say "yes" haha. if she wants to keep you around, she is going to say whatever she thinks you need to hear to keep you around. just keep your mind open to that possibility. she will never tell you the truth straight up, it will pop it's ugly face in your interaction with her, and the only way you'll be able to see it is if you keep your mind open to it.
the fact that she said she has always had feelings for you might be a good thing, only if you don't act on it right now. as her friend, the best thing for her to do is stay single for awhile. she should just not worry about being with guys and try to figure herself out, why she chooses to date assholes who treat her like crap. girls who tend to stick with douchebags usually have self-esteem issues. just support her, be her friend, and nothing else. all the lust and sexual interest will prevent her from being able to work things out on her own.
i myself have had issues being in relationship after relationship, and it doesn't give you the opportunity to really figure yourself out too much, especially when you start dating at a young age...relationships end up defining you sort of and it's hard to really know what it is that you really want/need. this is more directed towards her, as her friend, maybe try relaying that information to her. maybe knowing that you are going to be there for her might make it easier for her to try being alone for awhile. hopefully after a decent amount of time for her to get over her ex and being happy alone will make the chances of you guys getting together later on a lot more feasible. just a thought...

No worries, NBT. The cross section of 30-somethings I deal with is extremely narrow. Very advanced in some ways and extremely sheltered in others. I was just making a guess on your age based on some of your posts and I was wrong.
