Yeah, I have a friend with a masters in micro engineering. It seems that the university was after money because no one have jobs for him with that degree. I know SEVERAL engineers and yes some do make good money but for many it took them quite a while to get there. The ones making 80K+ are at big companies. Even with a degree in engineering or accounting (know that well too), you cannot assume you are going to get the job that makes the big money. I say try for medical school. Even in medical research, they will try to pay you the lowest they think you will accept.

Careers in the IT field are good as well because it is ever-growing and won't be slowing down for some time.

I've thought about going the MBA-Technology route which could lead me up to CTO and CIO slots in corporations.

Depending on where you're going.

The IT field is growing at such an exponential rate that it doesn't matter if there is competition. You'll find a job. Law is where the competition is ruthless.

If you're good at what you do then you're going to find a job. It's that simple.

Yeah, I know a few in computers. My ex's best friend only has a baccalaureate degree and he is moving up the ladder very quickly. I have another friend that wants to start his own business. My guy is into law and his best friend is a patent lawyer or something like that and he is indeed ruthless but he is not like the "other" lawyers. He makes a lot of money and has a home in the millions but no time to enjoy it. :P I'm serious. He has no time for himself.

Now that I think about it, these people are successful in what they do (Maybe the micro engineer will be successful once he finishes his degree this year). They are highly motivated though. They want to do what they are doing. Also, all of these people are men that I am thinking about. I don't know what that is about but I see it in the medical research field too. :surprised

EDIT: And I'm sure most of them did not start off making good money. In fact I saw some of them go from nothing to something (including my ex, his best friend, my current male friends, and my current guy). I saw them ALL start off with nothing their first year out. You must be highly motivated to be successful.

Did you guys forget that he started dating me with a child already? Did you miss the part when I said that he takes care of her like his own and tells everyone that she is his daughter? He has experience with taking care of a child with my daughter and his nephew. I have no doubt about his dedication to our child. When I brought up abortion early on, he broke down in tears because it would be a hard pill to swallow.

Even if he were to turn around and cheat on me, I know for a fact that he would never turn his back on the kids. Not even my daughter.

Nothing is wrong with some math. I mean jobs where it is surrounded with plain out math and nothing else is not something I want to be in.

Generally speaking you're looking at anywhere from 50-70K out of college with a BS. With a master figure about 10K+. Now once you're with the company for a while figure about 80-100K, no more than 100K. But, if you're an engineer in management you can make some serious dough. Looking at either from 100-300K depending on you're experience, how long you've been with the company, and where you are.

AJ is right. We're a family of engineers and scientists. Some making >300K, working in aerospace for the govt. That's salary, not including investments.

Go to school, Nish. Math is hard, so what? Bite the bullet, its worth it.

I don't know about the program Cain was in (LVN, I think?), but RN school is very hard, and yes, you will have to do math, and there is no room for error. The program I went through required 100% on the math exams to stay in the program. I never had too much trouble with it, but I had a solid understanding of stoichiometry (the math used in chemistry), and I liked math. Actually, I think the math was the easiest part of the program by far.

If you are seriously interested in nursing, I suggest you start out as a CNA while you do your pre-reqs. You will need excellent grades in order to be accepted into a nursing program, so don't slack. I entered nursing school with a 4.0 GPA, and the lowest I heard of in my program was 3.5. Even with the requirements for high grades to be accepted, around 30% of the students who got in ended up flunking out. Also, the grading scale is different in nursing school - 80% is considered a failing grade.

things may be different where you live - I understand that nurses outside the states have less autonomy than American nurses, even in places like Canada, Australia, and Europe, so the academic requirements may be different.

To be honest, I wouldn't dream of doing nursing school with 2 young kids, but a couple of people I know did it.

LOL, the only comment I have is don't use this^ word to a math or physics person. They will be confused. Its not really a *kind* of math, not like algebra or differential calculus, its a chemistry term. Its really just arithmetic (perhaps sometimes some algebra), no advanced math required--just to make it less scary for Nisha. ;)

Are nurses expected to be able to calculate 1/2 lifes of their meds for patients, volumes of distribution, etc? Or do the medicos do this when they write the script? If so, then you'll need a bit of calculus also, Nish, but not too much.

As for requirements, my friend is a nurse (RN). She has a BSc, a 5-year university nursing degree (management). This is for Canada. But there are also 3-year programs that exist. I dunno about those requirements. I do know the university program, the drop out rate was vicious in her first year. My friend would come home crying sometimes from her clinicals, so Vash is right about it being very tough.

I love math!

My sister graduated from a 4-year nursing program last May and passed her boards in July. She was a good, not outstanding student in high school (actually was never good with sciences) but she worked her butt off in nursing school and did well.

Of course, vash is obviously your best resource, having done it herself! But I just wanted to give another perspective.

Anyone that doesn't work their ass off in nursing school doesn't deserve to be a nurse. You're dealing with people's lives.

I failed my stoichiometry test in 11th grade so bad my teacher said he'd let me retake it the following week if I came after school every day and studied.

So I did.

Studied my ass off.

Finally took the test, and got like an 82 or something.

I was so proud of myself, proud that I put in the effort and made some good of it.

Then it dawned on me how much extra time I spent studying just for a dumb, good grade.

And gave up on the idea of working hard for good grades altogether and had to take the "stupid" version of the same class my senior year.
