I don't know much about aerospace, not compared to my engineering friends who actually build the things. But that article isn't about aerospace its about atmospheric science. But the answer to your unasked question is simply that I read widely and I live in a house of guys, full of guy stuff. Pop Sci, Pop Mech, etc.
What does your earnings have to do with this article? I know plenty of people who make more than me. Not all of them are intelligent. Its not that hard to make money if that is your only goal in life. I certainly do know where you live. I've been there a few times. Again, not sure the point except I think its a wonderful part of the world. Unfortunately I couldn't live there b/c there are no jobs for someone like me. Brisbane would be the closest I could get.

CEOs were making obscene salaries before the financial collapse, and they are the ones who caused it. Like I said, making money is easy. Making money and not selling your soul to do it is a bit trickier these days. The job swap was a joke: you likely couldn't do what I do and I wouldn't want to do your job.
So, lets get back to this thread. Do you have an opinion on the article? Do you understand it? This is not a criticism; if your background is heavy machine repair its unlikely you will understand what these physicists are saying. I'm happy to discuss.

The sad part is, for all the work North America and Europe are doing to make steps towards reducing the carbon footprint, it's two emerging markets that we have to worry about. Two countries with the first and second largest populations in the world. China and India.
More and more people are driving cars there, and they are so focused on the almighty dollar and finally getting to play with the big boys on the world stage, that the environment is the last thing on their minds. I've watched some horrible documentaries about the rise of industry and pollution in China, and its effects on the health and welfare of its people. It's sickening, and only a handful of people in that country are trying to fight their corrupt government to do anything about it.
I'm not quite sure the reason for the hoohoo over this report. Its not definitive (this reporter is biased as hell) and, even if its true that greenhouse gas contribution is a relatively small contributor to climate change there is a hella lot of pollution due to fossil fuel use. Not good for health. LA, Mexico City, even Toronto. One can see the smog from the plane coming in to land at Pearson. No way that's good for us compared to a clean energy source like hydroelectric.
The issue regarding emerging markets is difficult. Western industry is largely responsible for the present GHG levels and are the ones who have benefited the most economically. Is it right to tell these emerging economies they don't get their chance b/c the greedy West got there first? Some would say the West must bear the brunt of reduction costs for this reason.

But you're absolutely right about pollution. When I'm on my bike back in California, I cough a lot at night. At home in Arkansas, I don't, despite being a smoker for 2+ decades. I'm talking deep, wracking coughs that wake me up at night, and I can only attribute it to the levels of smog in San Jose, which isn't even noted for being smoggy - but with 1.3 Million people in the area, at least half of which drive, it's an issue.
Sure, we should bear the brunt of the costs, but it doesn't mean they get to have a free for all. I mean, their population is so much bigger than ours, they need to rein themselves in or they are in a position to completely screw the world over. People don't get a 'turn' at polluting, even if they think they should get their fair share of the economic pie. That's like saying some guy (we'll call him Jimbob) was this asshole that ran around raping women and had a fun time doing it....it was wrong, but all the other guys that didn't get a shot at it have a right too. But yes, emerging economies need to look at alternative energy also and consumption patterns. Where its economically feasible. Most of those technologies are too expensive without significant gov't subsidies.
On the other hand, its not just their populace that is driving their consumption of dirty fuel like coal (from Australia, Rafter!). Think about the laptop/iPad/iPod you use on a regular basis. Or your phone, TV, car... Asian baby. Made in China/Korea and shipped here by good old, oil-guzzling supership. Or the coke, coal, sulfur that goes from us to them. We see them everyday leaving English Bay, Blue. We need to clean up the shit in our own backyard before starting to point fingers at these other countries.

Well, some of those comments aren't too bad. Anyway, lots of ppl w/egg on their face if the report data turns out to be a real mechanism for cloud formation. We'll have to wait and see.
