I did not disregard your gracious gesture.. and I appreciate it. I just have this dumb part of me that desires to tell the truth (or what I believe to be true). It becomes very annoying... I'll tell clerks when they gave me too much change... if someone asks me to tell them the truth... I'm dumb enough to actually tell them what's on my mind. And yes, I'll even blurt out if the sex was bad if a guy should ask --- though I try to be nice about how I say it. If someone knocks over something in a store... I'll pick it up and put it back on the shelf.

I have absolutely no idea why I do any of this... but I feel the compulsion to do so... all the time. And believe me... getting into trouble for it has not dissuaded this one bit.

I had that particular affliction when I was younger. I grew out of it when I started spending time with ppl from other cultures, esp mid east & asian ones.

You like to mull things over, I know, so here's a thought for you.

Truth is fluid. It is not absolute, its contextual. There are many cultures, much older (and arguably more experienced), that think that the Western idea of 'always speaking the truth' is very immature. In fact, only children & the mentally retarded ever express themselves so blatantly.

It need not be your philosophy, but it is an alternate, equally valid one. In any case whichever you choose, there are consequences.

I tend to use a mixture, FWIW. Depending on the context of the situation. ;)

I've been able to avoid a lot of trouble by omission... especially in real life.

Not sure why I have a tendency to do this... my dad was ex-military and a pretty decent kind of guy though strict at times and my mom, though loving and caring... would rob you blind if you weren't looking (a bit of a kleptomaniac).

I agree a mixture that is dependent on the context of the situation sounds like the best policy.

I'd say demanding that she get rid of the cat is about as indicative of disregard as one can get. And one of the reasons the OP seemed unempathetic to me is that he categorized her love for the cat as "obsessional," denoting something was wrong with her for caring for it. To me that's like saying, "I'm going to take perfectly normal behavior that I myself don't understand, and call you crazy for doing it." Say she liked reading the newspaper from cover to cover everyday? Quick, someone pass the OCD drugs...she's obsessed with reading!

Broken promises or not, I'm still siding with his ex-girlfriend on this one. He sounds like he needs some lessons in compromising.

I'm assuming she had the cat when you guys first got together? If so, then I don't think you have any right to ask her to get rid of it. You knew she loved the cat when you got together and if you truly love someone, you accept every aspect of their personality, no one should be asked to change for anyone. If you can leave her because she won't get of her cat for you, then I don't think you truly loved her enough in the first place. If she starts off by getting rid of the cat just because you asked her to, then who knows where it will end, what else you will expect her to change for you? It's not about the cat any more, it's much deeper than that now.
