Since you ask, I've toyed around with some novel ideas with some guys on decarboxylations of alpha-amino acids. One route we explored that was novel to the amino acids was a solvent free decarboxylation. Another was decarboxylation of alpha-amino acids by going through the Schiff base intermedite which was obtained by boiling with different ketone catalysts. These too worked but transamination was a problem that resulted in low yields

Anyways, I could, like I said, do some tediously boring "research" like the kind a friend is doing (sequencing genomes). But calling that research, well yeah it's research, but not on par with anything new or novel

And also, any research *I* could do would likely be reinventing the WHEEL because my KNOWLEDGE BASE is so LIMITED and NARROW by virtue of not having taken more ADVANCED COURSES

And I'm not really upset w/you, and I don't think less of you being a 'mere' undergrad. These are very fertile years for you. I envy you this time. Your platter to choose from is MUCH larger than mine was. Just reminding you that its relatively easy to criticize someone else's idea compared with generating your own. But the latter is much more useful AND satisfying.

Why is this so offensive to you? I have to share a border with you, and I know I care who your president is, because it DOES affect me and my country, and many other countries for that matter. I also care about who is running countries like Pakistan and Iran. I don't have a say in it, but am I allowed to be concerned? Damn right.

Well, not voting at all isn't too different from voting blank (you can do that over there, right?), it just makes it seem like there's a lower turn-out of voters while those who were going to vote blank dont want to bother heading down to the voting machines.

And I reckon voting blank because you don't like either candidate is better than voting for one for the sake of voting rather than than actually caring.

The problem with that (as I see it) is you can easily end up with a country where half of the population (or more) is not represented. How do you get people to do anything, abide by government laws for instance if they can always say "I didn't vote for anybody thus this whole thing doesn't apply to me". Can be ignored maybe on individual level, but not if there are millions of them. Making vote mandatory pushes people to vote and removes that argument entirely. It makes every citizen and every group accountable for what goes on in their country.

The downside is that those who are poorly educated or don't look into what the politics are all about are more susceptible to simple tricks (say voting for a president who gives hand-outs in the area), the bandwagon effect and propaganda.

But yeah, in a developed country voting should be mandatory. If I was a dictator in a poor developing country I'd consider limiting the voting to those who are somewhat educated until nation-wide education and communication is firmly established.

Actually, I've found Australians as a whole more informed about politics precisely because they know they need to vote. So they take the time to find out about their local candidate.

When ppl are drawn for jury duty and end up actually going, I find they do tend to take their duty seriously. Same idea, I think.

If you ever end up on jury duty you shouldn't be allowed to vote, because lawyers always take less intelligent and more malleable people

I've been summoned 3 times already but they don't like me. :surprised

If I'm ever summoned, I'd be all like "All criminals are servants of satan and deserve to die and rot in hell."

That should keep me out of jury duty.

That said, I was very surprised they accepted me as a juror. My husband knew the judge, the court reporter, and one of the prosecuting lawyers because he testifies in front of them routinely, and I told the court that I hated guns (it was a trial involving a gun).

I'll admittedly lie, because I just don't have time for it. I'm not going to fail school and take the loss of income because some jackass wanted to do something stupid.

Let the housewives and millionaires and retirees do the duty....it's not like they have anything else to do. Hell, I'll do it when I'm retired. It might be good to interrupt my golf schedule now and then. Add a little excitement.

A lot of millionaires, like successful surgeons who are good investors, have to work to earn it. They are far busier than the rest of us. They do have a lot to do

I don't know anyone who feels they aren't too busy for jury duty, including housewives. In fact, they usually have a better excuse to not serve - they are usually responsible for the care of young children. Anyway, it's supposed to be a jury of your peers (at least in the states), so it only seems right the jury should be made up of people from all walks of life - not just those considered not busy. No one wants to serve on a jury, but they sure complain when cases like OJ occur, and the jury makes a bad decision.

The last time I was called, I was sweating bullets because I was worried I'd have to serve while I am in nursing school. If you miss more than 3 days, they will make you repeat the semester. Full time students are not exempt from jury duty in the U.S.

And yes DM - I was the very last juror selected. I bet they DID run out of better options.

They're not exempt here, either. It would be pretty crappy for me.

I guess when I included housewives and millionaires in there, I was referring to the rich people with no children, nothing to do, and who aren't going to take a huge financial hit for their 'duty'. Most really rich people have other people working for them that can take care of business while they're away....or can do it remotely.

I played as California Commonwealth and retook all the seperatist states by force (kicking out the Russians in the end).

The early votes are the long lines.

My roommate waited 4 1/2 hours to vote early.

We saw that line and said "f*ck it".

At least in New Orleans, there's only 1 place to vote early.

That pisses me off too. I try to stay out of it though and not comment to them or myself hehe. I have a friend who is broke, broke, broke and is planning to have children right now. At first I told her that sounds extremely irresponsible. It really pisses me off that she sounds so selfish. She wants children so badly and right now even when she is very low income. I could never do that on purpose. She said her biological clock is ticking so I just say whatever to her now. I try not to think about it.

I hope to not do that. If I have a child, I hope to make plans from birth to at least 18 years of age.
