Just found this South Park clip (see below) and was wondering which do people really think is better? Got to be the PC right? Even though Windows is crap.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Id_kGL3M5Cg
Anyone got the new Windows Vista? Is it any good? I hear it wouldn't even work with broadband at first!! Is amazing how they can manage to screw up a software system so badly after they've spent so long working on it. :D
OH MY ****ING GOD.
do you want to know the TRUTH?
just because a computer has macintosh or windows doesn't make it an apple (not mac, mac is the operating system) or a pc.
apple is just a brand that makes computers and computer hardware. a pc is any computer, which is a lot of computers brands such as apple, dell, hp, all the rest of them.
if you don't believe me, get a mac and a pc and open them both up. they are made of the EXACT SAME PARTS!
the reason why mac doesn't run on anything other than apple is because it was programmed for POWERPC processors. the only reason windows runs on 'pcs' is because it was designed for ibm compatible chips, intel and now amd. and now that we got rosetta, you can have whatever you want.
the bottom line is that the computer quality is based on the parts. today, a high quality computer will compute at 3.0 Ghz and operates with 2 gigabytes of RAM while having a 100+ gigabyte hard drive, and a nice nvidia video card. i'd go more indepth but chances are you probably aren't that interested.
as far as OPERATING SYSTEMS (Macintosh OS, Windows, and Linux) if you want to get jiggy with it, both OS and Windows suck. for many reasons, too. linux is compatible across most types of processors, both powerpc amd and intel, and can be made compatible with windows and macintosh software. it's FREE, and it makes up the majority of server operating systems.
and windows vista isn't much different from windows xp.
here are the basic changes:
requires a better computer
looks better than xp
that's it. don't get it until it costs less.
Cool. Thanks. I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to computers I know, but thanks for enlightening me, its good to know this stuff.Quote:

Honestly I never knew a Mac and a PC were basically the same thing, how dumb was I? :P , But now I know. Thanks. :)
So Vista is pretty crap then, well barely better than XP. Thought as much. Sweet... Windows still sucks...
I am interested in computers and how they work and such, but sounds like you've got knowledge and lingo so far beyond my own that you'd lose me after the first sentence. :D Thanks anyway though, you have to start somewhere. :)
VISTA was a major disappointment.Quote:

I'm glad I didn't waste my time.
I have Vista on my computer because that's what it came with when I bought it. It pissed me off initially because a lot of stuff wasn't compatible with it.......my internet wouldn't work with it, my antivirus program wouldn't work with it....ugh. It seems fine now. Doesn't blow my mind or anything.
oh wow, I'm so not getting sucked into this debate. I'm a mac person. the design industry uses macs. Mac, OSX, whatever... BUT, which is "better" depends on what you're doing with it and what you're used to. and thats all i'm saying to that.
Videogames and internet.
Keyword for me is videogames.

(surprises me completely) it uses a unix like theme. except its tcsh not bash. but there is bash. to tell you the truth, apple is just a limited version of linux.
i programmed wine for photoshop cs3 for ubuntu and i am perfectly content.
here is what the desktop looks like:
[Dear Guest/Member you have to reply to see the link.click here to register]
my ubuntu computer (20 gig hard drive 600 mhz intel piii processor 256mb of ram) seems to run faster than any apple at my job, EVEN THE SERVER, which has like 4 hard drives of 300 gigs and a 2.6 ghz processor and like 10 gigs of ram. strange huh?
OH i almost forgot something,
doesn't windows seem to be looking more and more like mac, as well as integrating more and more software with it?
my theory is that windows and macintosh will merge into one operating system. i think that eventually, linux will dominate the operating system world.
sorry for the multiple posts, but if you want to know about windows vista,
here is a nice video full of all its goodies:

i'm almost certain you'll be disappointed.

yup. linux is just too much for most ordinary people. It'd be like getting a fighter jet when all you want is a car. The fighter jet is obviously superior to a car in many ways, but this wont make any car drivers leave their cars!Quote:

mm.. 10 gigs of ram. yummy. Anyway, yeah, that IS strange, maybe there's a reason for it you haven't thought of. I'm no expert so I dunno.Quote:

there, now you've made me late for college :P
I got Vista and I'm happy with it. Like Bluesummer, it come with my PC. It's not a bad OS but I do prefer XP over it due to compatibility issues. But didn't it take 3 years until XP become stable with service pack 2? You just have to give Vista time. But one thing I have noticed is people who bitch about Vista either 1. Never used it before because they're fanboys/girls of other OS's 2. There computer sucks ass too much to run Vista.
Plus, it's fun comparing vista ratings.
EDIT:
3. Cos' Lovetwist just likes to bitch about things.
Neither of those reasons for me. I just bitch abou Vista, because its great fun bitching aout stuff and Vista is such an easy target. Think its become a tradition almost. Nearly everyone bitches about computers and all things Windows are at the top of the hit list. :DQuote:

Mac is a piece of shit, the only reason they are still alive is because of their gay ass ipood.
Mac's are for idiots that know nothing & don't do anything with PC's.
It just sits on the desk & gets admired by other idiots that think its sheeny colors make for a performance upgrade.
We had to use Mac's to do our editing when I was @ College.
It took literally days.
We finally got hold of a run-down Pentium 2 & would you believe it,a single job got done in hours, not days.
So I'm an idiot. It amazes me how offensive people are about this. what's wrong with having something that looks nice? You're just jealous :)
all the college computers at college are macs. work fine, though they are abused a LOT, bogged down with useless software people put on them, etc.
There's one girl who has a PC laptop. it broke twice this semester, seems to be completely broken now (she got it new last year). My totally student-abused iBook has lasted two years (and still going strong), literally using it every day, the battery still goes for hours, and runs all the new software I need perfectly, even though I abuse the hell out of it- for instance, right now, i'm running 13 apps, including two CS2 apps. I honestly could not find a non-mac 12" laptop that will run all the CS apps at the same time, working with huge 300 dpi poster files, and still costs less than 1k.
Most of the people who I know who have PCs are people who just want to surf, email, have photos and music. And they all have spywear, viruses, etc on them. those people have been much better off with a mac.
experiences differ. I'm not saying pc's are crap- they just are in *MY* experience. I am not stupid enough to think that my own statistically insignificant experience means anything.
but the truth is, as lilwing said.. macs and pcs are made pretty much of the same parts. The OS is getting more and more similar too. there's really not much difference.
I agree about disliking the Mac GUI. I also resent their expensive-ass boutique marketing- just how much more should a person pay for someting that looks flashy?
And that whole "we don't get viruses" thing is just because nobody has written a really nasty one yet. It's coming. Count on it. Yes, it's a pain in the ass to maintain a PC to keep it running well, and it's well beyond the capabilities of the average user, but Macs get ****ed up too, and they're more expensive to fix.
Mac won't run AutoCAD. End of story for me.
My XP Professional is working fine.
I don't feel the need to upgrade, as for one, there isn't much of a demand for the new OS, and secondly I'd prefer to get it once many of the bugs and kinks are worked out.
I'd love to get a Zune, but I know they're probably gonna refine alot of what's already there, so why not wait a year or two?
I think this is simply a matter of personal preference, as they're not fundamentally different.Quote:

I would not call them flashy. "Flashy" describes PC design- featuring lots of swerves, details, brushed steel effects, etc. Apple products tend to be quite.. Bauhaus-ish and understated- key word "under"stated, not flashy- tho again that is a matter of opinion. I'll pay for that. it is however, my choice to make.Quote:

yes, viruses can be written for any system, and you know what else? virus blockers or whatever they're called don't work worth a ****. so if you're *really* smart, they'll either stay off your computer, or you know how to get rid of them manually.
if you really want the best out of a computer, in terms of speed, stability, and overall performance, the best route is to linux. the downside to linux is yes, it's very complex, very hard to set up, and the options are so limitless that it could leave you staring at the beautiful blank desktop for hours!
i've grown to hate windows in the end. after trying linux, i'm convince that the effort is well worth it. i absolutely love everything about it. i enjoy using command line interface for certain tasks. but you know what else? i don't do what the normal user does. i do a lot of programming and remote accessing as well.
on another note, i just downloaded a new feature for beryl that makes my desktop snowing. how ****in' cool is that?
I have Vista. I got it on my new laptop. I think it's great. Haven't had one single problem
i thought vista might have been great. i don't personally use it.
a few of our new office computers have vista. i have had a lot of trouble installing many of the company software to them. not only that but i can't vnc in all the time... it seems like if i restart the computer after a fresh reinstallation, it ****s up again.
i like the theme but i hate that stupid 'widgets' thing. it's not useful to me. i didn't find many new features in windows vista that i've seen in linux and mac for years... like the fricken clear aero whatever it's called that makes the windows clear.
i hate how firefox crashes, and i hate internet explorer. most of my software just doesn't work on it. windows vista is not for me.
...except it's far more unstable and ****s with a lot of games and ****s with copyright stuff.Quote:

PCs are good for the average user to get into simply because of the range of software available for them.
Macs are higher quality machines. PCs offer more.
not sure about the video.. i'll have to do some research on that. what's the highest quality apple have available for video cards?Quote:

There are more options & possibilities with a PC,then a Mac.
For instance I have not seen any main stream studio using Mac's to process or edit their work.Instead, they use full tricked out PC's that can be customized accordingly.
It's only tight budgeted people with little knowledge of the equipment, that believe that they are getting a good deal.
Unfortunately, these are the same people that don't want to "waist" time getting to know their equipment or learn the benefits of anything else.
I blame Universities & College's for this & their "cheap" equipment as well.
When I finally got into the industry I had to learn a different system because of it.
As we say here in South Africa,in the language Afrikaans:"Goed koop is deur koop".It roughly translates to "A good purchase,is an expensive purchase".It looses allot of its meaning after being translated.
I apologize to all the standard Mac users out there if I have offended you,but I need a power house in order to do my job.& the only way I can get that is with a customizable PC.
I also think what TDurden meant to say is that Macs are more stable and dependable than PC's because a lot of software won't run on them.
no, it doesn't. Your personal opinion on something as subjective as design does not translate into a fact.Quote:

But that kind of power.. probably requires something above what is sold for the regular consumer. which, is what most pcs and macs are made for and which is what we're talking about, so it's like you're comparing two family cars by putting them on a race track with an F-1 race car that you built and filed down to the last detail yourself, rather than looking at stuff that'd be relevant to the regular driver.
I love my car analogies...
yeah, I agree with this. But, as you say, it is complex, which, for people who just want something that works out of the box and that don't have the enthusiasm, skill or even time to set it all up and learn.. it's just not the best choice for them.Quote:

that setup would probably drive you nuts. but it's the exact set up that he likes. again.. personal decision.
let me ask you this though, lilwing: if a friend asked you "Hey, you know about computers! I want to get one for the family. never used a computer before. just you know, surfing, email, photos, music.." what would you recommend them? Personally, because I know the kids would download viruses and be downloading music, if it was a PC it'd be full of viruses and spywear within minutes and they wouldn't know how to deal with it, I'd recommend them one of the cheaper macs. ie, macmini with third party monitor, or the 17" imac, or a second hand G4 imac if price is an issue.
No but done the tester on line it seam ok
Maybe not, But I have seen MACS and you have not seen my PC. Plus, we are tying to decide which one is better so then we would need facts to compare...and you bring up something as opinionated as looks? ....seriously...looks aside since they are opinion you can do more on a PC then a MAC...plain and simple..Quote:

Not to mention that they have cases that look EXACTLY like the MAC ones for the PC..so I can have it look just like yours ..except do more cause it is a PC. The amount of software available for the PC is ten times that of the MAC.
If you could give the names of the studios your talking about Tiay,I could form a better opinion, knowing what the final result looks like Vs what they used.
I was also stating that a PC is better for higher level work in my industry, which is Film,Media & Advertising.
A Mac just doesn't cut the mustard in my books I'm afraid.
Time is money & I can't wait a decade to process my work.
It has nothing to do with the "driver",but more to do with the car ( which we are comparing ).
Please also consider that as one uses a Mac for an extended period of time, they may discover/learn they want/need more.
More capabilities,more software compliances,better graphics,etc.
Next step in line to suit that need is an upgradeable/customizable PC.
I think that is possibly why the PC is more accepted amongst users.
It's the eventual choice.
ahhh, I see. so you have decided that *your* setups is 'best'. odd, I decide that my setup is best. lilwing would decide his is best. do you see how it is not that one of us is right, and everyone else wrong, but that we all have the setup suited to each particular person?Quote:

there's just as little point making a PC look like a Mac as there is running windows on a mac, imo. More software doesn't mean "do more" for everyone- because it's about personal preference. Do PC laptops come in with a built in camera? Not any I know. There's something somebody might value more than a thousand apps or the ability to do certain other things. personal prefe.. whatever. you get it.Quote:

oh for crying out LOUD! My point was, the fact that one setup is best for a certain thing does not make it "best" over all. Your structure for "comparing" values the things that YOU value in a computer. those things are not the same for everyone. You may put cars on a racetrack and declare the F1 the winner. someone else may put them on a country track and declare the 4x4 the winner. This debate is as ridiculous as watching the 4x4 guy and the F1 guy argue relentlessly about which is better, when they are simply suited to different situations.Quote:

I'm not telling you that PC's are crap and eventually you will switch to the goodness that is a Mac. 'cos it isn't like that and you wouldn't; It'd just make you angry. So don't force your preference on me or tell me that i'm a deluded idiot who will eventually switch to what you consider 'best', it pisses me off, and I think it would piss you off too if I was telling you the same thing.
But I can do everything you can and more. Don't you get it? For every visual and musical program for the MAC there is a one just like it for the PC...most of the time it is even better...the thing is that everything I can do...some of it you can't. Like play half life 2 for example..cause it doesn't exist for the MAC... i know i know..it is just a game but this is just ONE example. "Setups" have statistical power, my 8800GTS will out run the MAC easy. Another thing is I can do everything you can for HALF THE PRICE!
I have never, in at least 10 years using macs, thought "damn, I want to do this but there's no mac software for it". that is all that matters to me.Quote:

again, that's great for you, but I don't play computer games. My ibook will do me for the next year at least, but i'm starting to itch for something new; I need something that's 12" or smaller, lighter than 4.9 pounds, and isn't made of crap; I don't have the expertise to describe this in tech details, but you know what I mean; a proper HD, at least 1 gig memory, a matte color accurate screen, must have an optical drive, very small dimensions, will survive at least two years of daily abuse and will still kick ass while simultaneously running CS3 apps. oh, and I don't have the time nor skill to build it myself.
what would you recommend?
i would tell them this:Quote:

and then I'd offer to build them a computer that would cost them about half as much as a mac for the same amount of power. I can also build a mac computer from scratch.. for LESS than what apple costs, and with better hardware. did i mention that OSX is available for intel chips now? by the way i hate intel chips. too insecure. highly recommend amd. go turion.
i have built computers for friends before. even just acquaintances. just make them buy the parts, and i'll build it for free :)
as far as operating system goes, i wouldn't know what to tell them. i'd show them windows vista and then mac... maybe mandriva linux. and then i'd let them choose what they like the most.
Tiay, I work with Macs. And I can tell you that they do get viruses. Not as often, granted, but when a Mac gets a virus it's usually toast. There's very little defense in place. I can't tell you how many times I've had to tell grad students that their 30+ page dissertation was gone unless they wanted to mail their HD off to some company and pay through the nose for a chance to recover it.
i have yet to see an operating system that is inpenetrable and invulnerable to everything. ALL operating systems have flaws, and always will. there will always be a way to penetrate.Quote:

do you know how easy it is to remotely access windows? 10 times easier oh and especially because the root, or the head admin account that is only accessible through safe mode HAS NO PASSWORD BY DEFAULT. most people aren't aware of this. most people actually don't know there is even a safe mode, thus making their computer a thousand million times more vulnerable... oh and government has backdoor access to every windows copy.
linux, one of the first things you do (one of the most important) is set a password for the root account. this makes you computer invulnerable to many of the viruses out there written to penetrate the lack of password protection. BUT, if someone were to guess your root account, you'd be ****ed because all the system files are just in the highest hierarchy (/)
this is, of course, true.Quote:

I also dislike the intel chip. and I don't even have any big technical reasons to dislike it.. I just don't really understand why they switched.
oh! can you build me a super light/small but high-powered laptop? seriously.. is that possible?Quote:

ah, I see. yeah, I believe the guest account I have for my mom on my ibook has a pretty simple pw. but by default it can do almost nothing. This is my own fault though!Quote:

hm, I actually find this pretty interesting. I don't usually deal with stuff like this, so I hardly know anything about it, but I do understand it once someone explains it like that.Quote:

whatever that was, it very probably wasn't a real mac virus. Yes, there have been "proof-of-concept" "viruses" for mac. well.. one that I know of. but it never replicated itself effectively and only infected like 50 computers. I doubt your student's computers were affected.Quote:

btw.. these dissertations.. were they written in word by any chance? Because i've read this can happen when moving an infected .doc between pc and mac, it can still affect the .doc on the mac.
If you google something like OSX Virus, you'll probably get a bunch of different things claiming the honour of being "the FIRST EVER mac virus". but they are not true viruses. These things are not even active. And even if there is a handful of mac infections out there, it is nothing in comparison. A PC will get infected within days of being in the internet. My family have been online for.. 7 or 8 years I think? no viruses or infections, ever, even with pre-OS9 systems, and no loss of data beyond loosing unsaved changes in a document. There is no way that could've happened if we had had PCs.
I was chatting to a friend on AIM recently, (she has a mac) and suddenly she disappeared off the chat. next time I saw her she was like "oh i'm SO sorry, i hope you didn't think I just left! it's just that there was a guest in the house and he wanted to check his online banking account in a hurry." ..This guy had checked her boyfriends PC laptop, saw that it had pretty much every current virus and spyware on it, and so he used her macbook, which he didn't even check for spywear first.
On a sidenote tho, I agree that this is a possible weakness. That is, if there suddenly was active spywear for mac that infected a significant number, people might not be wary of it. However, there'd be so much talk about it on the internet, it'd be hard to miss.
In fact, I remember hearing about a company that makes virus protection for mac releasing a statement basically admitting that there was no use for their software, except as a "just in case" thing. the only people buying the software would be either paranoid, or businesses that have a policy of getting virus protection and were thus forced to buy something.
Sorry tiay,it doesn't seem like anyone else that has posted shares your opinion about Mac's.
We need more Mac pro opinions...
As for different type cars ( e.g.4x4 VS family wagon ), we are talking about Mac's & PC's doing there jobs.
Processing does not require me to "drive",or worry about "terrain",only the computer to do its job with what I have given it.
Power is the issue!
As with a more powerful PC,it does not cripple a "standard" user ( the operating system might do that ) it speeds up whatever the user is doing.Nor does it become "overcomplicated" unless your doing something "more".
As for the virus ordeal. If enough people used Mac's,I can assure you, there would be enough hackers & viruses to make protection software applicable to Mac's.Truth is nobody has bothered,as Mac's aren't popular enough.
I simply ask this Tiay:"Would you, as a person that uses internet, prefer 56K dial up or broadband/cable to do your internet tasks, etc.?"
