Something I learned about interacting with girls today

I learned this on a conscious level today. Never EVER "set up" a girl for a joke. Do not create an opening where it is easy, or even slightly obvious, for a joke to be inserted by the girl

Most girls are not funny and guys (like myself) cannot very well pretend to think something is funny that is not. And when you do, you only encourage the girl to try to make more jokes, which will inevitably backfire horribly unless you interject before then. But the point is that you set her and yourself up for embarassment

I didn't learn this the "hard way" today but there was a situation where I was getting along I thought pretty well with a girl and I realized what was becoming of the situation, in a moment of great inspiration. And then I realized, that in the past, I have helped create some embarassing situations for girls and myself by not doing more to avoid those kinds of situations and by directing the conversation more myself

^Which is a more general theme of all this: It is good for the guy to more often than not direct the conversation and really give it some shape

I'm thinking about my friend Tanya, who walked into the kitchen at a restaurant we worked at once, long ago, and said, "Does it smell like fish in here or is it just me?"

And you thought girls weren't funny.

I filled out a survey for my school and earned $20 doing it. Only took me 30 minutes to fill it out.

I dunno, DM. Giga and misombra are pretty damn funny....

I know lots of really funny girls, DM.

Maybe you're just seeking humour from too many intellectual types.....they tend to be drier than the Sahara when it comes to humour.

I thought the commentary about the 50pc chicken bucket "Here or to go?" was hilarious. That was a woman, wasn't it?

You know what I think it is? Teeny-boppers aren't very funny. They're boring, unoriginal, and caught up in a vacuous world of celebrity gossip and pop culture. Wait for the ones who grow out of that nonsense.

i have to agree with you DM (generalising about women) they are not as funny as the guys, having said that i have met many who are funny but they are definitely of a lesser proportion to men. irish guys are the funniest in my view having met many different cultures. they are not the best lookin guys (really most are ugg) so at least they have that going for them. coming second are the scottish, then english men and then aussies from my experience. does it have anything to do with testosterone? a lot of the stand up comediens that are women tend to be quite butch?! ;)

How can anyone say women aren't funny in Giga's presence? She's like the funniest person on this entire forum.

Of course women can be funny. My mum and my sister have truly great sense of humours. But, I know what DM means. Having a good sense of humour and being ''funny'' are not quite the same. I think men are probably better at being funny.

i think with a lot of women there's a comfort level that needs to be reached before they can be funny. it's taught to us that we shouldn't be gross or inappropriate and our senses of humor tend to be that way. if you guys could be a fly on the wall when a group of women are together drinking some alcohol and joking around you would be stunned at the shit we find funny. my bf and male roommate freak out when my girlfriends come over and we start talking.

Being funny often entails risk and the humour that results when things go wrong. Guys are generally better risk-takers, so there's more opportunity for things to go sideways & be funny.

I seem to be great material for really funny people to make fun of. It gets annoying sometimes, but I have no idea how to turn it off.

Both men and women like a sense of humour.
However, women see sense of humour as the man making jokes and being "funny", while men see sense of humour as women laughing at their jokes.

Males bond by making jokes more so than women, in my experience.

I agree that more males than females are better at making jokes. All the women I know who know how to make a good joke are the ones who have a male circle of friends and get along better with males.

I think it's harder for women to be funny... men can be raunchy and vulgar in public without jeopardizing how people view them. I agree with misombra that the way women talk when men aren't around is much funnier.

The lab I am in works more generally on the biosynthesis of amino acids. There are about 8 people in the lab

More particulary, I am going to be taking over a project started by a scientist from Yemen who is going back next week. I've been working with him the last few days

What he specifically has been interested in under the larger context of what the lab does is elucidating the regulation or coregulation of the branched chain amino acids in Arabidopsis

Neat. Are you specifically interested in plant pathways or using arabidopsis as a model to find regulatory genes? Those aa are important for muscle/protein synthesis in humans (as you know) and the insulin pathway. Is your PI studying diabetes or muscle metabolism, by chance?

The interest is entirely in plants. The Yemeni scientist identified 2 likely transcription factors that appear to coregulate the production of the aa's in question

These aa's are apparently present in high concentrations in drought conditions, presumably to have some kind of osmotic effect on water retention in plants under those conditions

One hope is that the work may lead to better knowledge on plant revival or resistance to drought
