[NEWS] Jobless graduate sues her college

    will you sue your uni?

A New York woman who says she cannot find a job is suing the college where she obtained a bachelor's degree, the New York Post reports.

Trina Thompson, 27, filed a lawsuit last week against Monroe College in Bronx Supreme Court.

She is seeking to recover $70,000 (£42,000) she spent on tuition to get her information technology degree.

Monroe College spokesman Gary Axelbank said Ms Thompson's lawsuit was "completely without merit".

The ex-student, who received her degree in April, says the college's Office of Career Advancement did not provide her with the leads and career advice it had promised.

"They have not tried hard enough to help me," she wrote about the college in her lawsuit.

Her mother, Carol, said her daughter was "very angry at her situation" having "put all her faith" in her college.

With her student loans coming due, the family would be saddled with more debt, the graduate's mother added.

Monroe insists it helps its graduates find jobs.

"The college prides itself on the excellent career-development support that we provide to each of our students, and this case does not deserve further consideration," its spokesman said.

I guessed this would be in the US someplace. Land of the Lawsuit.

    There we go.

Instead of actively searching for work, getting up as 6 in the morning, spending long hours sending out resumees and going door to door if required, or taking a job you are overqualified for if nothing else is available, or moving to where work is available, let's just sue the educational institutions instead.

Let's definitely not do any efford to find work, even if it's bellow our educational level. A bachelor flipping burgers or filling the isles at Walmart? NFW.

I guess they don't teach that kind of attitude at school.

Sadly, that's the only thing that is going to be waiting for college graduates, and even they will have to beg and beat out a few hundred who re in the same boat, because all the good jobs are disappearing because of the recession.

besides, college is overrated anyways. there are plenty of jobs out there that pay just as good or better with just a high school diploma. Even better yet, forget everything the system taught you about skilled trades jobs being for idiots and losers, and take an apprenticeship.
You'll be the one laughing last when you're making six figure yearly income, while mister master's degree is flipping burgers, barely breaking the 10 000 mark.

Information tech degree? Sounds like a useless major in this market. Someone should tell these dumb kids that when they major in something dumb or abstract, jobs will continue to be scarce, especially in a rough economy. Her parents should have warned her.

IT degree isn't a bad field. Plenty of jobs in companies and institutions for people wanting to run computer networks or support and such.

So, Ygg is right, this gal could find work if she got off her ass. Mbe not in NYC but there's work out there.

But, she is right too. A lot of colleges promise all this 'work experience' and 'career help', and the people in those jobs (student/career advisor) are pretty much useless, they never know anyone useful in the field. Not that justifies a lawsuit tho. Universities/colleges provide training not jobs. Bet you anything a relative of hers is a lawyer.

    anyway this lawsuit is dumb.

i got a degree in something that everybody told me, "you'll never find a job with that degree" blah blah blah.

it was bullshit. i had to wait more than a year but i have a pretty good paying job with my degree.

it wasn't even that hard. i made up a resume, sent it around, and then got interviewed and hired. plus i live in one of the poorest states in the u.s.

I felt bad for the woman, but I never understood why the judge on her case didn't throw it out. (mcdonalds coffee)

If I buy bananas from the store and slip on a peel that I accidentally drop on my kitchen floor, hitting my head, does that mean I get to sue Chiquita or the store for not putting "Warning: this banana peel could be slippery" sticker on the bananas?

there's a difference between selling somebody something that can be dropped on the floor and slipped on and something hot enough to cause 3d degree burns that is not in some kind of safe container.

You mean someone burning their leg vs. a head injury that causes a subarachnoid haemorrhage (aneurysm)?
