theist: Belief in the existence of a god or gods, especially belief in a personal God as creator and ruler of the world.

an atheist is one who does not believe in a god.

This does not mean they do not believe anything.

    People often make that mis-interpretation.

And what is God all my ever-so-confident atheist children?

    What is God?

    Hmmm... makes you think...

I don't subscribe to the whole Christian idea of 'God', that God is a man, that God is an individual being, blah blah blah

I'm sure there's some kind of universal power out there, but I call it 'God' because its the easiest thing to call it.

Heaven/hell.....it's all bullshit to me. Its all about positive and negative energy and what you put out to the world. You make your own heaven and hell right here in this this life.

*stands and applauds* BINGO! If there is ANY belief in a higher power in me (and there probably isn't) It would have to be that if there is a "God" of any type... it would be more in the sense of, we don't know what else to call it. But it would be more of an event that started it all... kinda like the big bang, but not quite

The big bang? Very interesting... The whole universe had a beginning, and yet, before that, there was nothing, and nothing created it.

    Right?

Wait this is all getting confusing. How can something come out of nothing? Do roses bloom on dead thornbrush? Does intelligence bloom out of stupidity?

    What the f*ck is GOD???

    On the God note:
If there was the big bang, who was there to create the two solid masses that collided?
If we all evolutionaized from a single-celled organism over billions of years, who created that first organism?
If there is a God out there that created life, then who created God?
Its a swirl of a never ending mystery.
But I will tell you all this, if there is a single entity out there, whether it be all in our minds or not, that can give people the hope to live on throughout all the hells on earth, that can give someone dreams, faith, trust, a deep down good feeling, and/or a reason to live and fight for what one believes in (For I tell you one thing, there is no such thing as an atheist in a foxhole), then I choose to believe that that entity exists somewhere. If not for myself, then for the rest of those who live in this world...

    OpticalIllusion----DoubleProxy has discovered the advantages.

"I love her, shes wonderful, everything about her religion is turning out to be an asset in our relationship - fidelity and all the other Christian values."

You lost her, because you kept fighting her.

Huh? When did I ever fight her? I went to church with her every sunday, and tried to believe in God. Hell, I tried to become Christian for her. Although I'm not Christian, we BOTH withheld all the values of the Bible. I loved the fact that she was so passionate about something. So explain again what I did wrong.

... or maybe I misunderstood your post

"God is there for those who need him."

The very, very sad thing is that I detect NO irony in that statement. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Frasbee really means that?

    Correct me? Please?

OpticalIllusion----I didn't know you had tried becoming a christian for her sake. You hadn't mentioned it in your posts. Nevertheless, sorry if I have upset you.

Hey, Im in the same situation. I believe in God, but Im not completely keen on going to Church. Its not my thing, but I've been going every Sun/Wed because of a girl I like. The problem is, if I wanted to back out, I just couldn't because I've been going for about a year now and everyone there has gotten to know me and I them. Im starting to feel uncomfortable because I've never been accepted into such a large group of people, I feel if I left now I'd be letting so many down, and my guilt would dance on my brain. Im sorta one of those who sacrifice for other's happiness, although I've never figured out why...

Maybe I should have stated it differently.

How about "religion is there for those who need it".

Cause that's what I believe. Religion should only be for those that feel they need it. It shouldn't be forced upon those who do not.

Sometimes I go through times when the idea of "God" helps me cope. But I'm just as quick to drop the idea of God once I feel better.

As I've said before, for me, my standing on religion and theism all depends upon the day.

Ah, the whole "religion is the opiate of the people." I'm mainly against the politically-structured monotheistic version of God, which dominates most western religion.

Simply being a sheep can help you cope, but I prefer the idea of taking your spirituality into your own hands, and having your own experience. My experience has been that God is not "on call" in the way that you imply, like
if I ask for him he will suddenly "show up." I feel rather that God is something eternal and everpresent, something essential to the root of my own being.

Blah blah blah blah. I talk so f*cking much!

I think I have mulitple personalities.

    Wheeee!
