To Message or Not To Message?

So I came across this girls profile on Facebook and added her as a friend. I've seen her around once or twice, as she is friends with acquaintance of mine. We have never really met, however, I know she is single. Well anyway... the question is should I send her a message or not? and If so, what should I say? I've gotten conflicting advice so far so I'm curious what everyone here has to say.

Oddly enough, I found out a few years ago she used to work where like 5 of my good friends work now, so I could go with the whole 'we met a long time ago how have you been' approach... but I'd rather not. The other advice I've gotten is wait for her to post something on FB that I can comment on or ask her about... hasn't happened yet. So is there anything wrong with just reaching out to her in a random FB message? I'm just not sure what to say???

why not go into where she works and talk to her there?

she worked there a few years back, she doesnt work there anymore... but my friends have been working there the entire time. Otherwise I would ;)

Commenting on someones status to get them to notice you is not only lame, it's not going to work.

I agree... I'd rather just send a message... Keep it simple with "hey how are you?" or is that weird?

she doesnt really know you.. something like. Hey ive seen you around and would like to learn more about you...
