Gardeners of the world, unite!

So now I have some space in front and in the back of the house that would be nice to put some plants in. Mom and i went to walmart last night and bought some veggies to plant (tomatoes, cucumbers,etc) but we know basically nothing about plants or planting. I'll post pictures later of the space that I need to fill, but it really looks like after apocalypse. I really need help with landscaping it and if anyone can suggest plants of flowers I'd greatly appreciate it.

Ideally I'd like plants that have some pleasant scent. What are those?

Basil has a very pleasant scent and is in my parents garden

Lavander, has lil purple flowers on it. Dont ask me how I know this.

You need to buy plants that are appropriate for the zone you live in. Jasmine does well in our area, and smells like heaven, but it needs to have the right sun exposure. I think you should photograph the space you want to plant, and hit up your local gardening store (not WalMart) so you can get some expert advice on what will grow. There is more to consider than what will look pretty - soil composition, sun exposure, and watering/fertilizing needs matter. You can also have a look around your neighborhood at what other people are growing that is doing well in similar conditions.

my neighborhood is very close to yours, so you know how hot it gets. watering is more or less ok, there are 3 zones with sprinklers and the rest mom waters down at night :) thank god for mom btw. she cleans, cooks, does laundry and doesn't pay rent. so we both benefit from it.

She shouldn't water at night, but rather early in the morning. Nighttime watering promotes fungal growth.

Anyway, you are in a different zone than I am (it's hotter here in the summer, and colder in the winter), but there is a lot of stuff that works well in both places.

That lavender looks good^^^^^^^^^. smell is not over powering.........Rose bushes ,carnations???? (My Mate is landscape architect)
Frangipani

I am trying bouganvilla on my patio right now.... it's pretty tough for the first year.

Also, I am growing tomatoes, bell peppers, basil, squash, and strawberries.

From what I am reading, it doesn't like being moved or replanted, so I left mine in the original pot when I brought it home, since it is already on a trellis. I think it is in shock, though... the leaves have curled up somewhat, though they otherwise look healthy. I will probably plant it next spring, if it lives that long.
