I think emesis is representing the way lots of young males talk/think/behave these days, even though it IS rude. If you keep that in mind, maybe he will offer some tips about how to respond.
But seriously - who made the point that you MAY be a tad bit too sensitive? I agree. I hear weird stuff like that all the time, especially at work. The world has a lot more idiots in it than I ever imagined when I was a kid. You have to learn to respond without sounding shocked.
