Do you refer music/songs to a past relationship?

Thought i'd post asking this, as it always gets me.

I am a big music fan and listen to music for hours a day, and i'm not sure if this is just me and why i relate music to my past relationship.

Whether im at home, work, with friends, out drinking, if i hear a song i can relate to my EX, it just freezes me and brings back memories, which really bugs me, but gives me a good feeling inside at the same time, huge nostalgia.

So just wondered as to whether it's normal for songs to make you instantly think of a past relationship and person.

I usualy refer songs to some time period or event, and people as well, not only "relationship" people. Sometimes I would turn on specific song to remind me of particular moment and bring emotions that I felt at that time. Sometime I would avoid specific songs to avoid memories. I guess music is a very strong "anchor".

Yeah I've been there before where a song I've heard reminds me of an ex, a certain time in my life, certain people I used to hang with etc..

Definitely. That is one of the magical aspects of music, it allows you to recall memories, feelings, and more just by listening. I am sure there are studies that show hearing can be a memory trigger, as almost all senses can be triggers for memory. It is not unusual at all.

Yes i think music does that, a girl once told me that a certain song reminded her of me.
