I only tip well in places I intend to frequent.

I could care less about places I'll never go back to 10-15% in those places does just fine.

This thread reminds me too much of Reservoir Dogs-

I'll have to agree with Steve Buscemi's characterization of the tipping custom

Well that's the thing though is that MOST people expect customer service that is above and beyond someone giving you your drinks and food. At least here in the US they do. And if you're expecting above and beyond sort of customer service, which is me checking up on you, making sure that YOU tell me your food is great, making sure your water and drinks are refilled AT ALL times, having a big cheesy smile on my face, and boxing your food up and taking away your plates when your done, etc etc. You should leave a tip. I don't expect everyone to be as generous as some people are, just pay for what you expect from servers. And if the service is not satisfactory then let them know and leave a shitty tip.

It's the people that expect me to do so much and leave a shitty tip that piss me off. People come in with 4-5 kids, ask for 10 extra plates/bowls, MAKE A HUGEEEE mess, spill shit. etc and then leave a shitty tip.

I think that's the difference, I would never expect that much from someone serving me. I would certainly tip a person that did all that, but the most I expect is that my order is taken promptly (although I understand if it's busy) and accurately.

Some things you described is actually what's pissing me off. Some waiters don't really understand that coming every 5 minutes and asking if it's fine is ANNOYING. Once after finishing the food is ok , but not while I'm eating . If I will want something , I put my arm up . Your work is to look if someone has his arm up ...

Probably has more to do with how drunk their passengers are most of the time though.

I went on holiday with my friend once, when we were kids, with his parents, and they made us tip all our waiters (this was in Spain), even the crap ones that couldn't get out orders right, but I never saw them do it back here.

But other than that I have had no experience with tipping. I don't do it (generally speaking, I might put some money in a jar or say "keep the change"), none of my friends do (I went out to a restaurant with my friends only a few day ago), I have friends from all walks of life (from the chavviest of chavs to the toffist of oxfordites) and its just not something that any of them do. In my experience you would be the exception. Not saying that I'm right and your wrong, just that this is my experience of tipping. Is your experience purely personal or is this a tend you've observed generally?
All of my friends tip, too. I cant say about other people, but i dont know anyone that wouldnt tip. This is excluding pub meals where you order and pay at the bar.

OMG, i cant stand being hassled every 5 minutes, when ive got my food and drink, leave me alone, if i want anything i will signal a waiter over.

I once worked at a shitty cafe and my boss was kissing people's ass . She did it cause the food she was selling was more than bad . I mean, microwave bad
But I noticed that at bars or restaurant where the owners or waiters kiss ass is because they have shitty food . When I go to better restaurants they don't disturb me while I'm eating. They also get tipped I tip because 1. the food was very good 2. the waiters were nice to me (but not fake nice, I can see it when some are fake ,cause they tend to exaggerate ) 3. local looked nice 4. the price of the food wasn't from mars 5. portions were fine 6. I didn't have to wait 5 hours to be served . And when I tip it means I will probably come back.
What I don't like when I find a nice place and after some time they make smaller portions and have bigger prices . Now we have a place like this , a piece of cake got 30 cents more expensive but the pieces are getting smaller and smaller each time ... It's a shame cause they do nice cakes :/

I'm a generous tipper, and to be honest, I couldn't date someone who wasn't. I don't want anyone in the back messing with my food.
Relax... I'll need some information first. Just the basic facts - can you show me where it hurts?

That's why you tip well in places you frequent, and tip less in those you'll never go back to.

Exactly and the reason you don't come back is because the food is shitty or because the service sucks right?

Well here where i live, customer service is about knowing what the customers need before they even catch it. For example, if i walk by a table shortly after they get their meal and notice they need more water before they even ask for it. Or if they've got kids and are sharing the food and haven't asked for extra plates or what not and if someone is sitting there waiting for there friends to finish eating but they still have food left that usually means they need a box. So i go and ask if they need it boxed up. Usually if i notice someone not appreciating that i'm checking to see if they are ok then i leave them alone, i mean it's common sense.

I've never tipped poorly when I've gotten good service.
