    Marilyn Monroe quotes

Anybody else find them to be way too commonplace on, say, Facebook, or used by the really blase girls who probably have never even seen a Monroe film? Yeah, I already know: You don't really need to be familiar with the works of a person whose quotes are immortal, because blah blah blah, free country or fans of those kinda persons aren't entitled to keep those quotes to themselves.

    Still...

She is an icon beyond her films and often people like a saying without knowing where it comes from and that's ok. Also, a lot of people find older movies hard to sit through. I personally couldn't watch the classics when I was younger, I didn't have the attention span. Now I quite enjoy them, especially the old musicals. :-)

Side subject, I find it sad how few people under 40 enjoy gilbert and sullivan. I am by no means an expert, I've not even seen all their works, but I adore the Mikado quite passionately.

    Interesting and well-stated, MaidenMinx.

I've heard those names thrown around quite a bit, yet never actually knew anything about them (decided to wiki it now that you mentioned them). Might be worth checking out.

If you like a giggle and hearing your story line in song, do check out Gilbert and Sullivan (please excuse the lack of capitals etc before, I was on my phone). As I said the Mikado is my absolute favourite and is quite hilarious in my opinion.

While watching Gigi with my mum yesterday we were discussing how music and dancing fell out of movies. Before TV and movies you had radio, the theatre and books to entertain. When TV and movies came in the idea of just watching people 'live out' a stage of their lives would not have been considered entertainment. They needed the songs to engage the audience in the stories. These days, if we want music, we listen to music in a wide variety of styles to listen to and a decent variety of ways to listen to it, therefore it is not so important to have it as a major part of the story telling. Don't get me wrong, soundtracks are important in conveying moods etc but breaking into song and dance is now deemed distracting.

Not a single one of my facebook friends has used marilyn monroe quotes. Einstein, aristotle, wilde yes. It gets boring, yes. Unless its a Churchill quote. I love those.

Common marilyn quote for fb is her "if you can't handle me at my worst you don't deserve me at my best" or whatever it is.

Geeze that's deep. I'd be ignorning posters, or whatever, if they started posting that stuff. Minx, am not much of a G&S fan but I've always liked the Mj General song. ;-)

I'm actually more of a Pucciniphile. Cotton candy of opera.

I'd be happy to have friends like that (assuming they don't just look up "famous smart quotes" or something on Google, but instead actually contemplate and post those statuses). Being 21, yeeeah, I am not likely to have friends discuss Einstein, Aristotle or Wilde.
