I don't have much to add to the other posters comments, I agree with them. Yes, ignore them. If they contact you, be polite but hold your ground insisting on polite communication. The moment they stray from that, end the communication.
Just wanted to add that his family is extremely toxic. Good people like yourself will feel some guilt about cutting communication with them but you shouldn't. When dealing with people like this, remember, its never really about you. Mean, toxic people *always* have something going on in their lives that make them nasty. Feel sorry for them, protect yourself, b/c they don't have the capacity to extend themselves to considering you.

Second thoughts can generally be amended with judicious action; injudicious actions can seldom be recovered with second thoughts.
