Can you offer me some advice people from Canada?

I have been considering emigrating for ages. My life here in Ireland is working for nothing-just to pay bills and rent and a little left over for pizza or an odd night out. I am finding it stressful right now and wondering is there no more to life than this.. I am also ambitious and want a career but opportunities here are rare and I am getting more and more fed up.

I want to plan for the future. Me and my bf want to buy a house, get married, have kids-all in the next ten years and it just seems impossible. We recently tried to get a mortgage but on our incomes-its just not possible.

I am getting more restless and really want change. I want money, success and could do with things like new clothes which I am struggling to afford and its getting me down lately. Dont get me wrong, I appreciate having a roof over my head, a wonderful man and our lovely dog but I am itching for more now and feel like a volcano that is going to explode as I am bored in my job and just want more. I feel like I am wasting my life here and my potential.

Anyway my boyfriends best friend recently moved to canada. He is working hard out there and earning really good money. He plans to do this for 3 or 4 years so he can come home and buy a house. It sounds really tempting to me but I dont know where to start.

its not just all about the money. My main priority is getting a good job so I can gain good experience and then I may find it easier to get a good job when I come home but I also want to have fun, go site seeing, do different things, enjoy life for two or three years together with no stress or money worries before we have to worry about night feeds and nappy changes etc when we eventually do have a family.

My boyfriend works as a store manager in a tyre depot. He is good at any kind of hands on manual labor. He works hard and is very fit. I am intellectual and want a career in the corporate world. I would love to work my way up to hr management or just management in general. I am not sure where we could go in Canada though that would suit us both-where we could both work hard, save a lot of money and also have a lot of fun.

i also want to bring our dog with us but I am not sure what time of year it is safe to fly out with her as I know the weather can be dangerous. I would appreciate any advice

    Thank you

    Ahh, the ol' pre-life crisis.

    It'll be alright.

Try to enjoy the things you have now. Trust me, once you get to the "corporate world" and "HR management", you'll miss Ireland.

Do either of you have a job lined up when you come here? If you don't and you're not a citizen or here legally and can work, how do you think you're going to get hired?

With the little bit you've shared, it doesn't sound like either you or your boyfriend have done enough research on legally migrating here so that you can work. Last I heard they were only allowing skilled labour over from Ireland on work visas???? I'm pretty sure we don't have any "Tyre Stores" on this side of "the pond."

Sorry, don't know much about immigration but you don't sound very prepared.

You need a lot more then that unless you plan on moving her illegally and getting paid cash under the table in which case I say bugger off, particularily if you're going to be moving back to Ireland with everything you make. Sorry, but seriously.. why reap what you're sowing in Canada? I hear the States has plenty to offer lol.

Google is your friend so start there, but I think without acquired skills that Canada is needing at the moment, it will be years before you're even considered legally or for a work visa. Do you have someone here that will "sponsor" you?

Oh by "tyre" you mean "tire." I thought "tyre" was a store name or something. We have lots of tire stores here but it's not considered a trade. Car Mechanic is a trade though I don't believe its one of the "needed" types of trades that the Gov't is looking for. I think it would depend on what your college degree is for as well.

Anyway, you have a lot of homework to do. I'd not jump into any of this (you or him) until you're sure of what you're doing. Unless of course he's just going to come here for a few months and make a bit of money under the table which of course is totally illegal but it's done a lot, I would think. In the meantime, he'd be losing his steady job there.

Just keep working at getting your ass out of the cash for gold shop and getting a better job, save some money and stop dreaming pipe dreams for the time being. Neither of you are equipped emotionally or financially or planning wise to make any sort of huge move at the moment by the sounds of things and Oz is even more strict about who comes into their little fifedom.

There are rules about bringing your dog over here as well.. have you checked them out?

yes a little but its very hard to find good info. Ive goodled everything 100 times coz I was thinking about this about a year ago too. I even looked up the best places to live and work in Canada and found different cities but im still lost and dont have a clue. i know there are restrictions with the dog but apparently she just needs a few injections and letters from the vet and we can only land with her when the weather is mild.

It probably is a stupid idea right now without any money saved. I should just keep trying to get a better job here but theres not much opportunities and im so sick of being broke

As Yoda said There is no "try" only "do." I don't think you're putting much effort into getting out of that shop. At least not as much as you could be doing. What's your degree in?

I dont have a degree. I have a diploma in hr management and also supervisory management. I also did some childcare and special needs and have a diploma in that too but I had to change my mind twice due to lack of jobs and then I couldn't afford to do my psychology degree.

i dont want to go from one crappy job to another so Im being fussy right now.

My opinion but just like LovesReject's excuses, I find "being fussy" just another one. Surely there is something worth more money and with less boredom that you could be doing while you look for something where you can use what you learned? I say take anything you can get that will get you out of the habit of doing nothing and getting SOME money to do it.
