Wisdom teeth

i had mine taken out when i was 19 ... all 4 at the same time! my face was puffy for about 4 days and my diet consisted of soup, yogurt, and pudding ... since then, i've rarely eaten yogurt and pudding cuz i had it so much back then ...

I had to sign a form stating all the things that could go wrong (jaw breakage, numbed lips, etc) ... that's the only thing that freaked me out ...

I suggest bringing a walkman with you and listening to music ... and just amp the volume up when u hear drilling or cracking ... haha

Now I'm glad I only did 2 at a time. Seems like when you take out more than that the healing process is a lot slower and some of you get completely knocked out for it. I only got the numbing stuff injected and while it felt swollen, it didn't look too bad..and it was only for a little while too.

Err...same here. Now the shot DID hurt a lot and I hear drilling and cracking but it didn't hurt that much. I had only one taken out. I'm having my other one taken out tomorrow. I'm taking it slow...

I'm more worried about the bottom one which they'll have to take out surgically. I have to find a specialist and that I'll probably do in Denver, not here in Moscow. I'm trying to enjoy my stay you know. Heh.

I've just remembered that my friend used to eat mashed potatoe (really creamy) because she could just swallow it and that would be it.

as long as you keep taking those meds, you will never feel pain... oh and usually liquor will help numb the pain.

i can't believe that people have their wisdom teeth taken out without being put to sleep. i can hardly stand a filling. i would have gone psycho if i was awake through that ordeal. i would have murdered my dentist or something. probably why they put me to sleep huh. that drill makes me insane.

Ha ha..on the bad ones they had to cut me, break the mollars, then take them out in 2 pieces. On the easier ones you just feel them pull and tug at it with some physical effort, then you hear like a cork being popped out of a fine bottle of wine, and you taste a good gulp of blood down your throat.

But you're numb, so it's no big deal..it's kinda funny actually. Come to think of it, ha ha, I had my cousin record the process a little bit for me to see later. Ha ha, I have that on VHS. Ha ha, what a weirdo..who does that? Only me. It was also because my dentist was my buddy so it was all pretty informal. Of course, he did go to school and is a dentist..it wasn't that informal.

That's just cause everyone is different and reacts to things differently. Tolerance levels and whatnot.

I'm 16:

I got my bottom wisdom teeth pulled out about a year and a half ago, then over x-mas break last year, I had jaw surgery.

Let's put it this way: No PAIN AT ALL

The wisdom teeth was worse then the surgery. When they pulled the wisdom teeth out, it swelled a lot more then the surgery, etc. Even the doctor will tell you the surgery does less to you then the pulling. Weird, huh? Well, it all went well. Now I have 4 screws in my jaw. I had an over bite, so the moved by jaw forward, btw.....

But in all essence, I really had 0 pain both times. Just a lot of swelling.

The day after surgery, you should put on an ice pack on the spots for 10 minutes, then leave them off for 10 minutes. Do that for about an hour in the morning and an hour at night. On 2 days after surgery, do warm rags instead of icepacks the same way. It will heal the swelling A LOT faster.

O yea: in reference to the guy who said he ate to much pudding etc. Try having jaw surgery, not being able to open your mouth (my jaw wasnt wired shut, just wasnt aloud to open it), and not being able to eat anything harder then scrambled eggs for a month without your jaw cracking and having to do it all again. Keep in mind: there about a handful of things softer then scrambled eggs. Try living on that for a month

Wow you guys need to find some oral surgeons who know what theyre doing! Most people should be or prefer to be put to sleep. The way they need to maneveur your jaw to get those out is what's painful in the aftermath. When your wisdom teeth are impacted they need to be surgically removed-ie: incisions. Some people who already have erupted wisdom teeth dont need to be put under, but if youre anxiety level is high, be put to sleep. The anesthetic takes much longer to work if your anxiety level is super high. Ive had 2 removed with just local, didnt bother me. I was soar, but no swelling. The swelling comes from the length of time it takes the surgeons or dentists theyre in there removing those things. If they come right out, no problem.

Its better to be put under if your wisdom teeth are completely impacted. And to have them all removed at once I highly recommend. Its easier, one time deal, rather than going through that twice. It may seem like it takes longer to heal, but everyone heals at a different pace, and theyre pain tolerance is different also. Pain meds do work, if you take them correctly. Rather than waiting for the pain to get so bad, then take them, youre in trouble.

Dry sockets are and can be preventable, dont drink through any straws, or smoke. You need to allow the blood to clot up in the sockets. Sometimes, its enivatlbe, the person just didnt bleed after the extraction, ouch from hell, cause there just isnt really anything you can do for dry sockets.

I know this cause I work in the dentistry field. Have assisted on umpteem surgical extractions, while people were fully awake. They didnt have swelling, so...anyway, I highly recommend anyone having theyre impacted wisdom teeth out, get put to asleep and do it all at once. And stick to soft foods for the few days. Also, ask your dentist for a syringe for later on, cause food can get down in those holes, and it stinks to high hell, you need a way to flush that out. A disposable syringe is the easiest way to remove it, just use warm water. But only use that after about 10 days after the extractions.

Nah mine didn't hurt either and about pain in general... @ MISOMBRA especially - the older you get the more mature your approach to pain and anxiety is. At some point I just realized that giving doctors a hard time is simply unnecessary and childish. I remember trying to hide my butt from a shot when I was seven, but hey I was seven. I'm thankful enough for the numbing medicine, some decades ago they didn't even have that. Talk about being put to sleep...

I have a surgery in my nose...I was awake the whole time. For 45 minutes. Hearing and feeling (but not pain) all the tugging, pulling, sewing and gosh knows what else they were doing. Pretty horrifying, but that's the price of life.
