    For cake:

3 oz semisweet chocolate (not the cheap stuff!)
1 1/2 cups hot brewed coffee
    3 cups sugar
    2 1/2 cups flour
1 1/2 cups unsweetened cocoa powder
    2 tsp baking soda
    3/4 tsp baking powder
    1/14 tsp salt
    3 large eggs
    3/4 cup vegetable oil
    1 1/2 cups buttermilk (shaken)
    3/4 tsp vanilla

    For ganache frosting:

    1 lb high-quality semisweet chocolate
    1 cup heavy cream
    2 tblsp sugar
    2 tblsp light corn syrup
    1/2 stick unsalted butter

    For cake layers:

Finely chop chocolate and combine with hot coffee in a bowl, stirring occassionally till chocolate is melted.

In large bowl, mix flour, sugar cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder & salt. In another large bowl, beat eggs for 5 full minutes. Add oil, buttermilk, vanilla & melted chocolate/coffee mixture and beat until thoroughly mixed. Add sugar/flour mixture to egg mixture and beat until well combined. Divide batter betwen 3 prepared cake pans and bake in 300 degree oven until done, about 60-70 minutes. Cool completely and then frost.

    For ganache frosting:

Finely chop chocolate. Bring cream, sugar & corn syrup to a boil over moderately low heat, stirring constantly until sugar is dissolved. remove pan from heat & add chocolate, stirring until choclate is dissolved. Cut butter into pieces and add to frosting, stirring till smooth.

Icing can be semi-poured over cake layers while still hot if you want a smooth surface, and then allowed to cool. Otherwise, you can cool the frosting until it is spreadable.

Now that I typed this all out, I really hope you will make it. Its to die for, really.

thanks vash I'll make that for my housemates- does one really need the corn syrup?

edit; oh, did you mention layers? can you cut the cake into layers and add the frosting in between?

edit2; oh yeah, and how many grams is this mysterious 'cup' entity? I never figured that out.

1 ounce is approximately equal to 30 ml, and there are 8 ounces in a cup, so 1 cup is around 240 ml. I'm not really sure how to convert to grams.

I've never tried omiting any ingredients, so I don't know if you can leave out the corn syrup. I don't think I'd try it.

If you split the batter into three round pans to bake, you don't need to cut between the layers. You just put one cake on the cake plate, put icing on top of it; put the second cake on top of it (upside down will make the finished product look better) and ice the top, put the third cake on top and ice the top and then the sides. Make sense?

Sometimes I just buy a chocolate powder package, dump some eggs, oil, and water, then mix then bake. Tastes OK.

thanks oh, if i'm not mistaken, a ML is actually equivalent to a gram... if.. that makes any sense? (edit;.. ahh, a ml measures volume and a gram measures weight- so it depends on the substance? for baking/cooking purposes I think they are mostly interchangeable, as far as I remember)

yeah, my mom always cuts it into layers when she's making cake. It's kind of tricky though, true.
