What a moronic question See, if I did not have a pistol, I would not be able to defend myself against a semiautomatic pistol. And quite frankly, it is very difficult to defend yourself from someone who has a knife, especially if they know how to use it.

Here's a better one: if you're walking down the street and two big mother****ers come out from an alleyway and start beating the shit out of you, would you rather have a pistol, a knife, or neither?

Same question goes to you Vashti, because I know you're no heavyweight champion boxer.

If someone wants to kill you, go ahead, take away their guns... don't let them have knives. You know what they will do instead? They'll start to watch you. And then they will sit around for you to become vulnerable, like lions.

I'm not exactly sure why those people's guns were being confiscated. What's the background story on the old lady? Was she aiming the pistol at the officers? Was she a threat to them? What about the other people? Come on shh, you were just arguing about that in sombra's police thread.

^^this one is in my area.

I'm just going to throw out the same argument that I throw out to you people every time. Why? Because you know it's true, and you can't prove me wrong. Guns do not kill people; people kill people. I'll say the same thing about drugs: Drugs do not ruin people's lives; people ruin their own lives. Live and let live, people. Blaming guns as the cause of death of innocent people is irresponsible. If you need to have your gun taken away from you in order to take away the temptation to kill people, you probably shouldn't have had a gun in the first place... so what can you do to make sure people like that don't get guns? Regulation. If someone wants to get a gun, they will always be available, just like drugs even if it is illegal to own them.

    "Certain rights were temporarily suspended."

Think about that, you can keep a gun in your house so long as it's not needed?

State of emergency and break in's are THE time to have a firearm.

I don't understand all of your trust of the police, they were protecting nobody but themselves.

I can't wait to exercise my right.

I don't think anyone's gonna argue the old woman pulling the gun in police presence should only be interpreted as hostile and should be dealt with in a life-threatening, defensive manner.

For the seemingly arbitrary seizure of property, I'm not such a fan. Yeah, it probably was during those floods, so some personal rights & freedoms were probably suspended; if that wasn't the case, it's a disgusting example of theft.

Removing the right to own one will strip a far larger percentage of law-abiding citizens than it will criminals, and I think this could help with the odd nutball doing a school shooting, but I'm guessing it won't have much impact on the more "standard" violent crimes involving firearms. I'll admit, however, I don't know the statistics; I only suspect that those owning firearms through legal, documented means seem less-likely to go shoot people.

Why do you need to own a gun in a first place?
    Don't expect anything.

"need" in this day and age is such a ridiculous word.

Anyway, wouldn't you like to own one to make us over here "lick the devil's ass" or however you phrased it?

No, thats not my way of thinking.

I just find guns stupid. Ultimately what was once created as a killing weapon, to get power over something, is now for just to shoot things. Funny how many people don't even realize the power of bullet, how they whistle through the air and can cut you right open.

Unlike many of you, and despite the fact that I live in a large city, I don't walk around paranoid that someone is going to randomly jump on me and start beating the shit out of me.

About that old woman - whether or not she was pointing it at the cops, anyone crazy enough to pull a weapon in that scenario is crazy enough to use it. I don't blame the cops a bit in that instance. If the guy on the ground in the video I posted pulled a gun out while he was lying on the ground, I would have no pity for him, either.

I hope gun laws become more and more restrictive, so I have a better excuse to buy automatic Uzis and Mac-10s for $5,500 less than if they were legal, and without the hassle

I smell a positive feedback loop.

1.People buy guns for personal security because it is the only effective defense against a gun-wielding assailant.

    2. It is easy to obtain guns if you want to shoot someone.

With this in mind, isn't the solution boosting the problem?
Where do the guns come from that criminals and soon-to-be criminals use?

If it is so easy for the public to purchase guns, anyone who does not yet hold a criminal record (is that how its currently regulated?) can get one. Another effect is that during break-ins at homes as well as gun shops more weapons become readily available as the thieves distribute them into a wide market. And if neither of those two apply, it is still pretty simple to obtain one from a relative or a friend who possesses one, right?

To use Sweden as a comparison, where the public is banned from having firearms (except for permits for hunters to use hunting rifles), the only real way to get a hold of a gun is to have connections to suppliers who can get you one. So everyone apart from those who got good connections with criminals won't be able to get a firearm, which makes the presence of firearms less and thus the need for them for personal security diminishes greatly. Even the cops rarely have to hold people at gun-point because the probability is pretty small that they're packing.

You can't compare the US to Sweden. Sweden has a very homogeneous population compared to the US. If you look up gun crimes in the US, you would see that the vast majority of gun incidents are caused by black people living in cities. That is just a fact

Cocaine is illegal and readily available to anyone that seeks it out. Firearms are slightly less portable, but won't be much less accessible, to anyone that seeks them out, other than for those people that don't break laws. I'm not really standing on some platform of paranoia or self-defense. I like guns; they're a hobby, if you will. When I get sick of this town I'm living in and all its weirdness and depravity, I can head back to my parents' house out in the middle of nowhere & blast off a couple rounds at a steel plate way back in the field, and it feels good.
