Orthodox churches generally follow the Julian calendar http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julian_calendar Which was at one point used by entire Europe before being replaced by Gregorian calendar in 1582 which we use at the moment

I've always been confused as to why any church would choose to use the Julian calendar. Wasn't one of the big selling factors of the Gregorian calendar the fact that it prevented holidays from sliding away from their originally intended dates?

From what I understand Gregorian calendar revised the leap years, but because it was issued by the pope at the time and Orthodox churches don't recognize the pope's authority they didn't accept the calendar. I think they followed a revised Julian calendar instead, but the dates still differed between the two.

The older calendar (forgot which), was actually missing two months. It only had 10 months and this caused havoc with the seasons shifting around & messing up the farmers--->merchants--->rich ppls holidays. E.g. October ("oct" = 8) is our 10th month now but used to be #8, hence its name.

Oh wait, this happens to most non-3rd world countries because people decide they want quality of life instead of poverty in many cases.

Who said anything about bickering? Is fighting over who has the better BMW or Lawn any worse than fighting over whose baby is cuter, or whose child is more successful?

Nope, I consider all those examples stupid. This is primarily(but not limited to) seen in America, not just by Americans but in America. It changes people to this "I have to be better than the Joneses" mode. My parents are like that, but our family in Europe is completely different. Laid back, they don't give a shit over there.

i think it comes down to what the perception of success really means. most people it means not having to worry and being happy right?

the problem comes in when people start making goals upon goals upon goals: when their original goals made them happy but they just didn't stop to enjoy. thats the difference i guess
