You make judgments about people based on looks, too - everyone does, unless they are blind.

And John Wayne Gacy looks like a child molester.
My gf works with the elderly and she got the shit kicked outta her by an old lady...I wouldn't worry about an old lady beating my ass...appearances mean nothing...actually the same old lady grabbed a dude by the balls one day and dropped him to his knees and then beat him in the had with a glass dish.

    Appearances mean nothing.

This statement seems rather extreme and idealistic.

I tend to agree with Vashti. In many situations in real life, one does not always have the luxury of getting to know the person behind the appearance.
So we have to make certain decisions based on what we can see and it is good enough that we are right 80% of the time.

eg if someone comes in to interview for a corporate job dressed like a hooker, she is rejected straight away.
Doesn't matter if she can actually do the job better than everyone else cos you dont want to waste time finding out that you are wrong.

So I would say that "appearance isn't everything" but wherever possible, one should try to appear appropriate to the situation.

People choose how they dress/present themselves based on how they WANT to be perceived... I am merely obliging. You don't find many gang-bangers dressed like a Sunday school teacher, do you? Of course not - they wouldn't be accepted by the group they are trying to affiliate with. Likewise, you can gain a lot of other clues about a person by how they look... you can tell which women are likely to be high maintenance types, and which ones are more down-to-earth, which people really don't care at all about their appearance, who is likely to be mentally ill, who is aggressive and who is passive (body language), who is practical and who tends more towards the frivolous, and who considers themselves "cool and edgy".

To pretend that looks are completely irrelevant is ridiculous, but feel free to insist otherwise.

Old people with dementia should be expected to react violently, BTW. If their brain development level is that of a small child, one should expect physical tantrums, just like a child.

Relax... I'll need some information first. Just the basic facts - can you show me where it hurts?

We were talking about judging a persons character...thats the word I keep bringing up...thats where I mean appearances mean nothing...you can learn nothing about a persons character by their appearance.

I will keep saying otherwise but I don't see how we've gotten so far off my first point...you called a woman a skank based on her appearance and I said it was wrong to pass judgment on a persons character based on their opinion...I already admitted that you can learn about their style by looking at them like 4-6 posts back or something.

Actually, I didn't. I said she LOOKED like a skank. And she does. She might be nice, and smart, and pretty, and generous, whatever, but she still looks like a skank. (shrug.)
