I downloaded a russian book in a .txt format and when opened it showed characters only. Is there a way to turn it into text?

Sorry, I don't think so. The txt file was probably saved with the wrong encoding.
You can try to change the format of the text from Latin to Cyrillic, though. From the top: Format>Font and then the drop down menu at the bottom.
yeah, that didn't work. anyone knows a good site to download russian books?

There are loads of them on the net. I'm not aware of any one superstore website, ussually I just google for what I want and I get it for free on second or third search.
Don't cry, don't regret and don't blame
Weak find the whip, willing find freedom
Towards the sun, carry your name
In warm hands you are given
Ask the wind for the way
Uncertainty's gone, your path will unravel
Accept all as it is and do not blame
God or the Devil

You need to change the encoding of the document to UTF-16. The data is all there, but your editor simply isn't displaying it properly.
make sure your OS supports unicode. if your still using xp, you should install the russian language pack. My PC also displays asian characters as squares by default. After I installed the asian language pack, all characters came out perfectly. This is especially helpful when you browse the web. My browser displays asian characters without turning to garbage even if the encoding is set to western ISO-8859-1.

What book are you trying to get?
This should be able to further assist you with your file extension endeavors: .fb2 files
Ok, I'll play nice, its quite wonderful here. Here in the jungle, I usually get my e-books in PDF, and chm formats. sometimes a deja vu gets into the mix but that is a very rare thing when you live in the mountains. Excuse me, I need to change the vine that I attached to a rock which I use for a mouse.
