    NEw York?

I've been thinking about moving to new york lately. I just want to leave my life behind and move there. It's like a new start. What do you think about just one day packing up and leaving? Just say goodbye one day and leave the next.

I hope you have piles of money and can pack all of your belongings in a carry-on bag. Housing there is a nightmare.

Why don't you take a trip first and check it out? If you can't afford a recon trip, you can't afford NYC.

I would advise a long-term rental there before deciding to live there permanently. City life isn't for everyone. Also, be sure you have a good-paying job there first. Otherwise you will be living in the projects.
Relax... I'll need some information first. Just the basic facts - can you show me where it hurts?

a new start is great. but starting in one of the most fast-paced cities i don't think is great. people say "if you can make it here, you can make it anywhere" about new york for a reason, so if you actually want to try to make a living there, i would expect tackling it very hard and hanging in there very hard.

moving to new york for simply a new start isn't wise. you'll get the same experience of a "new start" probably any place else.

I love NY... I went to college there... Columbia and NYU... so I've been both uptown and downtown, and I must say I had some of the best times of my life. I'm now at college in another major american city, but it doesn't compare to NY at all!

But NY takes pretty long to get used to... i came from a smaller city and I had problems sleeping because of noise for like, 6 months.

Per household, you can't live in NYC if you make less than $60,000/year.. it's impossible.. when I say household, I don't mean kids.. I mean one person.. possibly two..

Expect rent for a studio to be $1,200-$1,300.. and 1-bedrooms starting at $1,500.. and that's in a safe area of Queens (Ditmars), NOT in Manhattan where you can easily expect to get a GREAT DEAL on a studio going for $2000/month..

Small Salad ($10); Gallon of Milk ($4); average cost per person for a basic lunch ($14), average cost for dinner per person ($28).. it starts to add up.. don't forget, service people are faced with those prices too.. so their hourly-rate reflects that.. if something breaks down.. expect to pay the plumber or electrician ($400/hr).. that's right, and I kid you not!

the plus side is.. if you can provide skilled labor (some kind of professional service) "Accounting, Finance, Medical, Legal".. you'll be more than able to make the transition.. if you're thinking of comming into NYC and work as semi-skilled to unskilled labor.. you'll be living in a hell-hole till your last day with no money or time to escape..

and that my friend.. is comming from a New Yorker..

Why does everyone assume the OP was referring to NYC? NYC sucks dick

I'm from western NY (Rochester) and either live there or in Ithaca. Both suck. But Rochester does a better job of keeping it real

i think nyc is awesome. i'd love to live there. but if i did i would want to live in manhattan. but it's rediculously expensive. and some people live in a studio apartment closet with ten other people.

NYC breeds ridiculous arrogance. Everyone from NYC thinks they are the ultimate source on ghettoness and city life, despite most of them being ridiculously rich and probably never hearing gunshots from a homicide.

Everything is better in NYC. Go out and eat a pizza with your college friends from NYC, Papa Joe's on 32nd Street has way better crust.

Anyone who talks with a southern accent is mentally retarded because of their accent and they talk slowly (but meaningfully)

Seriously, if there was one city I would not want to go to again, it's NYC
