Per household, you can't live in NYC if you make less than $60,000/year.. it's impossible.. when I say household, I don't mean kids.. I mean one person.. possibly two..
Expect rent for a studio to be $1,200-$1,300.. and 1-bedrooms starting at $1,500.. and that's in a safe area of Queens (Ditmars), NOT in Manhattan where you can easily expect to get a GREAT DEAL on a studio going for $2000/month..
Small Salad ($10); Gallon of Milk ($4); average cost per person for a basic lunch ($14), average cost for dinner per person ($28).. it starts to add up.. don't forget, service people are faced with those prices too.. so their hourly-rate reflects that.. if something breaks down.. expect to pay the plumber or electrician ($400/hr).. that's right, and I kid you not!
the plus side is.. if you can provide skilled labor (some kind of professional service) "Accounting, Finance, Medical, Legal".. you'll be more than able to make the transition.. if you're thinking of comming into NYC and work as semi-skilled to unskilled labor.. you'll be living in a hell-hole till your last day with no money or time to escape..
and that my friend.. is comming from a New Yorker..
