What is our country coming to?

Detention camps being built incase of a US emergency. Thats right, on top of hearing today, the govt can open our damn mail without our permission or going through the courts. Check this stuff out, its scary. To think if you protest in any way against the govt, there ya go, in a box car possibly shackled to a detention camp.

this is nothing new. we have been losing our rights soon after it was given to us. i think that's what the entire purpose was. give us something so the government can take it back and laugh at us like little children.

The protesting is what bothers me. If this was an outrage though, the government would be overthrown by the people.

Meh, if you behave yourself, I don't think there is much to worry about from the government. I'd worry a lot more about the crime rates in Peru.

Squirrley - this is what happens with globalization, especially post 9/11. Of course, this was merely the event that brought into focus the problem many countries regularly face with terrorism. It was certain to make its way to the U.S. eventually. I went to a lecture in the 1980s that talked about its inevitability. I don't think the average joe needs to worryabout uncle sam reading their mail.
Relax... I'll need some information first. Just the basic facts - can you show me where it hurts?

My mail is pretty damned boring. Uncle Sam would have to take a nap.

I have to agree. Uncle Sam is welcome to read my mail. He can even listen to me tell my friend how much bigger my dick is than his over the telephone.

I don't care. And if by listening to me and everyone else Uncle Sam is able to prevent a bombing, great.

I have nothing to hide, so they can check out anything they want. Even though I live in Canada and this doesn't really affect me.

I understand what you're getting at with the personal freedoms thing, though. Although some things I don't believe in, like the RIGHT to bear arms. There's some crazy people out there that have no business possesing weapons of any kind.

My mom is so nuts, she thinks Uncle Sam actually DOES listen in on her phone conversations just because she thinks George Bush is an idiot. She's pretty sure everyone who expresses a negative opinion of W. is under close surveillance.

When we were kids my friends and I used to initiate every telephone conversation with "I'm going to assassinate the president" because we figured that would catch the attention of a government super computer and some jackass would be forced to listen to us prattle about Ninja Turtles and stuff.

Actually, these are one of the things that make your country scary

Vashti, sure nothing will happen to anybody if you behave yourself, but well... honestly, US has a worldwide image...

That's freakin hilarious. Nowadays I'd be scared you might actually end up getting picked up by the Secret Service or something. Not so hilarious.

I don't care about the worldwide image anymore, as it pertains to our own national security. It's become so much politically correct nonsense. People don't like us? Fine, stay home.

BTW - I am much more scared of all the psycho gun owners here than the government. I sometimes think we have many rights. Not usually, but sometimes.
