If you walk into a subway.. and the trains aren't running.. why do you tell the people comming down that no trains are running? Is there any self-gain to saving a few seconds of a stranger's time? Yes.. there is actually.. but it's so indirect.. (the seconds you save them add up.. less stress.. more time to relax or do work.. which leads to higher productivity.. which leads to more output.. a stronger economy.. which will somehow come back to you.. very very VERY indirectly).. So you can argue that you have done it to perhaps enjoy the value of a couple of more cents in the future.. that's one way to look at it..., or.. you can look at your personal state of well-being.. you know how stressed & angry you felt when you had to walk down all those steps.. waste all that time.. to find out that the trains were not running.. you know how bad you felt... and you also wish that you knew sooner.. so that you wouldn't have to bear the negative effects that followed..
So you can be the person who thinks.. "forget it.. I found out the hard way.. let everyone else find out the hard way".. you can be spiteful..., or.. you can instead think "wouldn't it be a shame to let those people go on and make the same mistake and feel as bad as I did? it's not much to ask to warn them or help them avoid that fate".. and you can be the person who tells them that the trains aren't running..., there's no personal satisfaction.. you don't really gain anything from it.. you just know that you helped someone else avoid the same fate you had to endure.. you know that you were part of the reason that person is now better off.. I guess that's the only real reward..
