    riddle me this

just for fun....see if you can figure out the two riddles below.....

    1) a general is accused of high treason, is sentenced to death by the court-martial. He is allowed to make a final statement, ………..after which he will be shot if the statement is false or will be hung if the statement is true. ………..The general makes his final statement and is released.

    What could he have said?

    2) Three men checked into a hotel room for which they paid €30. The next day, the manager realised that the men had been overcharged. She gave the bellhop €5 to return to the three men. On the way to their room the bellhop decided to keep €2 for himself, and give each of the three men one euro three men had now paid €9 each, or a total of €27. This plus the €2 the bellhop kept makes a total of €29.

What happened to the other euro?

    1. "I will be shot." If he says this, and the statement is true, then he should be hung. But that would make his statement false, which means that he should be shot again, which would make his statement true once again. Therefore neither order could be carried out and he was released.

    2. The point of this riddle is tricking the person into adding the €2. Since they originally paid €30 and the manager returned €5, they would have paid €25 total between them. Basically, you have to subtract the €2 that the bellhop pocketed from the €27, not add it.

I've heard the second one before.

And the first one just required a little bit of thinking. Meh, that was my first answer anyways and it turned out to be right.

The general could have also said "I won't be hung"

The problem comes down to changing the truth value of the statement after one of the actions

"I won't he hung" will not work because it would lead to him getting that. "I won't be shot" is the best way to get out of this situation. Of course they still could have shot or hung him if they wanted but that's beyond the riddle hehe.

Nope. If he said "I won't be hung" then if the statement is true, he would be hung. However, then his statement would be false which would mean that he'd be shot. But then his statement would be true.

If he said "I won't be shot" then if the statement is true, he would be hung. And since the statement couldn't be false, he would be hung.

"I won't be hung" and "I will be shot" are the two answers.

Actually, if he said he wouldn't be hung he'd be thrown from a cliff for poor grammar.
