Question for the parents ...

As some of you may know, me and my wife are having a baby girl. One thing we're on the fence about is whether or not our daughter will co-sleep in the bed with us (in a co-sleeper box thingamajig) or sleep in a bassinet near our bed.

I am getting ready to set up the nursery, but the wife seems to be pretty firm on wanting the baby to sleep in our room/bed ... So, she I just go with the co-sleeper or the bassinet or the crib straight away?

She's due the first week of May, so we haven't much time to decide this.

I'm not a parent by a long shot yet, thank god, but none the less, congrats!

Out of curiosity, why are you opposed to it? I know if it were me it wouldn't work because I am selfish about my bed space, even with women

Mainly because I am 6', 200+ lbs, and am afraid of accidentally crushing her in my sleep. I know that psychologically I'm supposed to be able to avoid that, but there are statistics showing that it has happened ... I still think I can crush the little box on the bed.

I can see that being an issue, I'm 6'5" 185, I don't want to roll over a baby. My roommates cat made the mistake of sneaking into my room in the night and cuddling up to me, she got her tail royally owned when I flopped over in my sleep. She not allowed on or near my bed to start with, needless to say she hasn't ventured in since then to my knowledge.

Holy crap, I didn't even know such things happened. Imagine how bloody devastated a guy would be after accidentally killing his baby while sleeping. Damn.

Y'know, I've always heard that and it has never happened with me. If I roll over and touch my daughter I'd move back over. Unless you are a really heavy sleeper I dont think this should be a problem for you.

I didn't allow my boy to sleep with me (he was in a bassinet right next to me) because my stepson (who was a co-sleeper) had a LOT of problems with separation anxiety when he was forced into his own bed when his parents divorced at the age of 5. It was such a stressful time period that I refused to endure it again. My boy turned out fine, and never had any sleep issues.

I was more flexible with my girl because she was a cryer and her small size had me constantly worried, and I wanted to feed her whenever she would eat. I would pretty much let her sleep wherever she was. At 6 months when she was put on formula (still less than 10 pounds), she was moved permantently into her own room. She was fine, too.

Seriously, I think safety is a consideration. Babies can smother on the blankets when they are too young to push them away, or by being rolled over onto (if you are a heavy sleeper). Most people who do the co-sleeping like it, but I definitely would advise against sleeping with the baby if you've been drinking alcohol. Also, as the baby gets older, having sex with them in bed becomes awkward.

I don't really think this is a "right or wrong" issue - just personal preference, and a question of what habits you are willing to try to break later on.

Shorty - I'm on facebook (not that I use it often). Wanna be friends? I want to see the pictures of your baby when she comes.

So do you mean you have sex with them in the bed when they're little little? I never thought about that.

When my sister had her baby he slept with them once in awhile, just when he was really little. They told her at the hospital that your body has a natural sense of boundaries that prevent you from rolling onto the baby (or rolling off the bed) but did warn against ever sleeping with the baby if you've had alcohol, like everyone's said.

What are the advantages? That the baby will sleep better?

I suppose you could go somewhere else, but I personally like the bed. Anyway, they are really to small to understand what's going on or to even pay you any mind, and they sleep a lot when they are tiny. I guess I never really thought about it too much because they were out of my bed before it became an issue.

The cases I have heard about have involved drugs and/or alcohol, but I guess there is a risk if you are an especially heavy sleeper. I had both my kids by C-section, which meant I wasn't EVEN going to roll over by accident (it hurts!). We put a pillow-barrier with my husband on one side, and me and the baby on the other if I had a baby with me. (He's a much heavier sleeper than I am.)

Some people think it promotes bonding, which I don't know about, but it's definitely easier if you are breastfeeding around the clock.

    We have this: http://citikids.com/store/shop_product.php?UPC=23505

We plan to practice sleeping with it on the bed to become more accustomed to it.
