Can a "date" be non-romantic? "going out" to get closer to someone even though the "relationship" wall isn't being broke?
or is this get together only worthy of the title "hang out"?

Depends on where you are from lol. Where I am from, even hanging out with a person from the opposite sex is questionable to an extent.
