    Project Natal

Check it out, the new motion capture and voice recognition technology which will change the face of gaming as we know it. The future of gaming will be without a controller.

I reckon that camera-based motion capture (as opposed to controllers/joint sensors) is at a fair risk of misinterpreting movements, colours, overlapping e.t.c.

And having to use a controller doesn't exactly seem to be considered as a problem, so it wont bring that much new to the table compared to wii's technology, and by not having any button/stick input altogether it can be quite limited.

For new purposes though the second clip is pretty good, when it comes to immersion. Hopefully they will pursue that more, would be awesome if it was developed for work purposes (imagine sitting in your living room and using it as a virtual workdesk with files, programs and whatnot), but precision is an issue and again it doesn't take it much further than, say, a touch-screen.

I've been watching this shit since it was revealed.

Hardcore gamers won't fall for these silly wii-gimmicks.

Wii sales have dropped because all the casual gamers who bought one are still only playing wii-sports, and there are very few games that have the gaming enthusiasts clambering to get their hands on one.

I'm gonna say Natal will be a fail.

My fear with Natal is that the hardware on the Xbox360 will be outdated by the time it comes out, no? I'm already noticing that some of the graphics on the Xbox360 seem muddy compared to that of newer PC games.

That being said, I'd love to see a Wiifit type thing on Xbox since I would definitely use it and don't want to buy a third console.

This is great. Don't expect Project Natal to be anything like that, though. It will be crap. But what comes after it and what comes after that, on the other hand, will be very interesting.

You know what's even more fantastic? 3D technology is making leaps and bounds. Before long not only will we be playing video games like that, but they will be in 3D.

I really hope that thing takes off. All the little kids who do nothing but play video games are going to turn out trim and fit from all that activity.

This is prety funny, I spent most of last week doing research for Microsof on NATAL & consoles. There are some really big economic limitations for NATALs devlopment right now. It's not going to be big immediately, and pobably won't even buseful until the next generation of consoles (2011), but I'm pretty confident MoCap controllers will be mainstream by 2016, and standard for consoles and PCs. Right now though, 'hardcore' gamers, the main demographic for this type of tech, don't like any controller that reduces their reliability / accuracy. So NATAL is going to be geared towards casual gamers & Wii Sports gamers who are able to spend extra. Xbox can't compete against the Wii on price point, so they're mainly jus one upping Sony's new PS3 motion controllers and getting time to refine the hardware until the next push.

Basically, once the tech is properly fleshed out and able to enter the market at $100, there will be enough users to make funding triple-A mocap titles possible. Until then it's just a niche market to test out on early adopters.

3D tech has been at near stand still due to he consoles. All triple-A titles are still designed from the ground up for console hardware from 06-07, i.e. DirectX9, 512MB ram (on XBox, 480MB for PS3), and a 256MB graphic controller. Considering that current PCs are designed with processors that are 8x as powerful as 3 years ago, have 4GB+ RAM, and 1GB graphic cards, the tech isn't anywhere near the hardware. And that's because it's not cost effective to make games for the hardware, and there's no poin for consumers to upgrade when 2010's triple-A titles still have the same hardware requirements as they did in 2007.

Main advances in 3D tech are in select PC games (think Crysis) and the battle between ATI & nVidia. Consoles just piggyback off of PC developments, but when the new consoles come out, you'll see a massive leap in 3D tech. It's all possible already. But no one will be spending serious money on it until 2011-2012.

I was talking 3D displays, MVP. They are becoming cheaper and cheaper.

First off, watching the first part of that video where he's doing karate......TV manufactures will back it because of all the broken TVs it causes.

I don't want to stand up and dance around in front of a screen to play video games, it completely defeats the purpose of it. If I want to exercise, I want to be hitting a bag or lifting weights, not putting on a show in the front window for my neighbors.

This will be warmly welcomed initially, but quickly trail off as a fad, just like the Wii did. Gaming and controllers are inseparable.

I'm disappointed. I thought this thread was going to be about Nadal, as in the tennis player.
