    Trypophobia

Trypophobia: The irrational fear of clusters of holes, pods, circles, cracks, cuts, and/or other asymmetrical shapes, especially those found in nature.

This is a rare "fear" that I have that's always intrigued me. I only know of 3 other people that have this (my brother, my best friends gf, and her sister) so I was wondering if anyone else experiences this.

It's not really a fear per se; my best friend's gf calls it the "heebie jeebies" lol. This was recently documented and the term didn't exist until 2005 I think.

I'd show pictures, but I'd rather not freak anyone who has it.

Anyway, this weird "fear" has made me curious as to why it exists since the beginning of time.

Not a clue... but I'm not a fan of the "lotus boob" and it's not because of a fear of holes -- it just doesn't look right.

As for clusters of holes, I can look at them all day. Perhaps it's not the holes so much as the idea of some creepy-crawly being in there that induces the fear?

If you think about people with a fear of heights, for example, they have a realistic reason for concern (falling), but I think people with full blown phobias also tend to be obsessive, which heightens the sensation.

Definitely fear heights... though it's usually heights greater than what I feel I can realistic survive unscathed from.

Twenty feet is about the most I can handle... beyond that, it's best if I can't see out a window --- at least initially. I can work up the courage to go out on a balcony without experiencing vertigo... but it does take a while.

I wouldn't say I "like" heights, but I find it fascinating to be high up in the air. I'll walk right out to the edge and look down.

Once I calm down... I do find it fascinating to be up so high. My third storey apartment in Dallas was great. I could see for miles from the balcony. Just took me the better part of a week to grow accustomed to it.

It's not a fear of impending danger or anything.

I get an otherworldly feeling that what I'm looking at is very unnatural and something is very very wrong. At the same time I'm extremely horrified.

But I don't think you can say I'm scared in any way. Others who have this get itchy all over.

Thats how i feel over buttons, when i see them, i shudder and rub my thumbs repeatedly in my hands, not because of fear, but because i feel somewhat awkward around them.

For me it has to be organic or something found in nature.

Clusters found in nature are on many occasions hives containing hundreds and thousands of insects with ill intent. Think of wasp, hornet and bee nests, think of maggots growing inside of human skin. Although not many people can make that association between clusters and hives someone with an early childhood memory (or arguably genetic memory) can probably make this connection very quickly. The fear is probably formed by some type of classical conditioning, it's the body's way to fight off (or warn of) a likely extreme situation.

I also thought it was classical conditioning until I found out my brother has it. My friend and her sister has it too. Not that 4 people is a good sample size for drawing any conclusions but I think it might be genetic.

I suppose there is a connection between clusters and hives; insects don't bother me at all though.
