Should I tell her?

There is this girl who I really like and care about and we get on very well and can talk really easily together and I have known her for about 2 years. Although I have always liked her I never said anything because she was in a relationship up until recently and I suppose I didn't want to risk losing her as a friend.

However now I have heard she is thinking about getting back with her ex who broke her heart and made her so unhappy for the last few months.

I want to know should I tell her how I feel about her as I really cannot stand the thought of her being upset all over again she is too nice to deserve that. I just want her to know that I care about her and I don't want to see her being as upset as she has been recently all over again.

So I guess I am asking should I tell her how I feel and what is the best way of going about it.

I don't think there is anything wrong with telling her how you feel, but if she decides to date you you had better watch out for the other guy. She obviously has some unresolved feelings for him, and may very well go back to him while you two are in a relationship. If it were me I'd ask why she was going to go back to him, and let her do what she wants. She may NEED to get her heart broken again to get it through her obviously thick head that he is a bastard.
