Why in the world is Facebook so important?

At all ages you see this obsession with friending people on these stupid social networking sites. People literally get butt hurt that you don't or upset that there is an ex. While I find it hilariously fascinating I just figured I would ask. What's up with this?

Facebook for me isn't the end all be all. I prefer a REAL FRIEND over an imaginary "friend" online that I don't know & will probably never meet in real life.

Facebook to most people is a smokescreen illusion of social status or a replacement for their idle lives. To the rest, it's a useful tool of communication. They made a South Park episode about it... I think it's pretty much widely understood why people do it. I get annoyed when people bitch about social networks and are pompous pricks with their nonconformist attitudes. Good for you, you don't have facebook - why don't you throw away your computer and give up all your material possessions and live in the wilderness with grizzly bears like Timothy Treadwell?

I'm a busy guy, and Facebook allows me to pay a little bit of attention to a lot of people: friends, family, and former classmates without calling them or visiting them. Much of the drama (at least here at LF) comes from friending people that you are just dating. In real life, I wouldn't introduce a girlfriend to my friends or family unless the relationship was fairly serious and stable. So I wouldn't do that with Facebook either. It's common sense.

I prefer 'real' friends and 'real life' interaction and 'real life' relationships.

I dunno, I think it's ok and for keeping in touch with family and friends who may live a zillion miles away, but not many use it for soley that do they? They use it to make friends they will never meet, to add as many strangers as possible and so that others think they are popular, to get attention that they don't get in real life, to have relationships with people they may never meet and to act all hard and tough ie: keyboard warriors and say things they wouldn't dare say to you in real life....oh and to look up ex partners who may be married with kids now, which could lead to divorce.....yeh its great, NOT.

I don't use it these days. If this is the future, god help humanity....

    It's highly useful for stalking.

Facebook is a good way to stay in touch with people you'd otherwise lose contact with (friends from uni, friends from overseas). It's useful, it's not necessary, but it's useful. Complaining about facebook therefore is like complaining about the remote control for the TV, because "You could technically press channells on your TV screen, get up and walk to make the TV channel switching more 'real'".

From what I can see, most facebookers are so into it because it's just another way to gain social acceptance. I see a lot of attention whores on facebook. Not saying keeping in touch with friends and being social is bad, but who and why would you need to update your status every 20 minutes? I just cant understand why people do this. I'm on fb maybe 2-3 times a day, just to check a message or message a friend from time to time. It seems like a lot people live on facebook. I dunno, maybe I'm just a weirdo lol.
