How do girls like to be told someone likes them?

So I really want to ask this girl out from school. I've liked her for just over a year now. I'm clueless when it comes to asking girls out. So how can I tell her that I like her and want to date her. Just come out and say it? Buy her something. We're both 16-17, and still in school.

Instead of telling her you like her, just start flirting with her a little and eventually ask her out on a date.

The one time that sticks out in my memories is when a guy told me he liked me using a sort of story. He said that he knew a girl that work (where I work) and who was interesting, fun to be around---and anyway he described me and said that he would love to go on a date with that girl.
