    Need a Hobby.

    Hello all!

So, I feel like I really need to find a good, relatively inexpensive, enjoyable hobby for myself. Currently my hobbies all revolve around either food or women, and both of those can get rather expensive.. plus I'd just like to expand beyond that. Anyone have some good ideas? A couple I've been thinking about...

Photography. I think that could be a lot of fun, especially as it would make doing other things (hiking, etc..) more interesting and give me a way to share that with people. The problem, though, is I feel it'd be a bit expensive to get started as I'd like to get a decent camera and potentially a way to print the photos myself.

Kayaking. This one is also a bit pricey to start up and involves gas, plus I have the worst vehicle ever for transporting a kayak.. so I'm not thinking this one to be terribly feasible.

Reading. The cheapest option, by far. I used to read quite a bit as a kid.. the problem with this is that I already read some, although mostly about food, and I just don't feel this qualifies as a hobby.

???? I'm not sure what else. Photography poses the most interest to me but I feel like getting into it could be pricey. Anyone have any good suggestions?

well, think about the advantages of those that you listed:

photography - there is an opportunity to meet many different people, you can have sessions with women, children, men, animals, gardeners. you'll establish connections with people from all walks of life. it brings a whole new meaning to meeting people. so even though it may be a bit pricey, it will definitely pay off in the end.

kayaking - great for your body.

reading - good for your soul and intellectual growth.

i say it depends on what you are seeking to get out of your hobby.

Yeah, you ladies and your permanent lifestyle, lol.

I suppose, if you really wanted to garden, you could start a terrarium. I keep snakes in terrariums. They are pretty low maintenance and probably wouldn't fill your free time, though.

What kind of interests do you have, GW? Right now, I am programming a NES game using BASIC. I've read a lot of documentation in the last few weeks about how to do all this. It's a project for fun, and I haven't paid any money for this interest. Maybe it's not your thing, though... especially if you're trying to get away from your PC.

Canoeing - blow up canoes are not too expensive secondhand and easy to get into the smallest of cars
Fishing - would tie in nicely with your hiking?
Foraging - would also tie in with hiking
    Gardening/growing veg
Photography does not have to be expensive, at least to start with

I definitely want it to get me outside. I used to be super outdoorsy and that kind of faded with work and such, so I'd really like to get back to it. I always feel better when I'm out and being active.. plus I live in Seattle and it is one of the most gorgeous areas I've ever been to.

Gardening won't work. If I owned my condo I'd work on building a little garden deck outside my windows but I don't, so that's out of the question. And if I had a yard I'd get a puppy and that would be my hobby.. but I don't.

Food and women are my interests. Haha! Sports.. I've thought about looking for a rec football league or something.. maybe.

Photography seems like the best option for me, just because it would make me more interested in hiking and I can tie it into a number of things and would be something I could share with others. I'll have to look more into starting up with it. I guess I really just need a camera!

Fishing and foraging are two I like, also! I definitely think if I got into photography I would do some foraging, too. Fishing is an interesting idea, it's another thing I used to do a lot of as a kid but not so much anymore.

join a gym perhaps? You may find out that it's more fun than you think - and offers opportunities to socialise too.

Jim had an awful day fishing on the lake, sitting in the blazing sun all day without catching a single one (but he drank alot of beer, so its okay). On his way home, he stopped at the supermarket and ordered four catfish. He told the fish salesman, "Pick four large ones out and throw them at me, will you?"

"Why do you want me to throw them at you?"

"Because I want to tell my wife that I caught them."

"Okay, but I suggest that you take the orange trout."

    "Why's that?"

"Because your wife came in earlier today and said that if you came by, I should tell you to take orange trout. That's what she'd like for supper tonight."

Photography sounds good. And you can get an cheap digital camera if you like. Another option is to learn to paint/draw.
