No, not really.
It was sparring - supposed to be used for putting technique into practice and trying out newly learned skills. If your opponent is raining heavy on you, all you're gonna do is stick to what you know best, making progress stagnent.
The fact that you had to be told you were going to hard several times makes you a bit of a douche to be honest.
