Why can't it be both romantic and pathetic?

it can be both. if the man knows he could not love again and pledges never to love another after she broke up with him. He loves her more than anything and will remain friends so she is happy and hide his feelings so she can be happy with her new boyfried. even though she has moved on, he never will.
