You are going to hurt him no matter what, it's part of life. Use this as your reason "we don't really have anything in common". Breaking up is never easy so just do it.

As stated previously hurting him is really unavoidable. Also spending time with someone that you don't have any interest in is a waste of time for you and him. Muster up the courage and
just be honest but let him down softly. You obviously don't want to criticize him but tell him your true feelings.

You can tell him you want him to meet your parents, or you want to get married and have babies, or that he should stop playing his playstation so much. When a girl said these things to me once, i just stopped answering my phone to her. Guilt free break up for you, and he thinks it was his idea and you can continue your adulterous affair.
