    Are people stupid?

Seems to me as if I've always been surrounded by slightly stupid people (although I love them to death and they're fun to be around). This does not include my family members.

I don't think this is arrogance, because when I relay stories about what my friends have said to my family, we laugh hysterically.

Example: One of my best friends, who is very active in student politics in her university, recently asked me "what's the difference between democrats and republicans, again?"

Another friend had no idea who Mother Theresa is, and very few of them could tell me who fought in WWII or what the capital of China is.

Does anyone else have this problem?

well are they being sarcastic or are they being for real? besides, everyone lacks a certain amount of common sense.

lack of common knowledge doesn't make someone stupid...sometimes it could be they didn't grow up with a family that really stressed or valued education. They can grow up and take an interest in self improvement and educate themselves, but you have to understand there will still be holes..some things are harder when you're older..

I don't think it's lack of common sense that's the issue. I think it's just ignorance plain and simple. Ignorance about whats going on in the world. Some people choose to make only the things that affect them on a daily basis the most important things in their life. As the old saying goes "They can't see past the end of their nose". Thus, they become indifferent to the things that they don't figure affect them or that they don't need to know.

    Some people call this 'stupid'

bottom line, who really cares in the difference between the democrates and republicans, there are gonna always be a difference of opinion with politics. or who cares who mother teresa is, she never came to my town to help me. WWII is over, basically everyone fought it in, it's called a "world" war for what reason...??? last i will never go to china, but if i do, i wouldn't wanna visit the capitol of china.

Its funny how so many people use the words "common sense" on here and do not realize that there is no such thing. I feel that there are stupid people around me all the time and I think this thread makes me feel it more.

sometimes people just don't know shit. instead of assuming they're stupid and therefore incapable of understanding something try explaining it to them if they're interested. i'm sure there are many people out there who know a hell of a lot more shit than you do. you think they think you're stupid too?

    probably.

OV, that statement might give people the impression you are harbouring some sort of a superiority complex. Don't assume you know more than everyone else because your personal opinion makes it so in your own mind.

I don't know more then everyone else. Some people really do seem to not think before they speak though. I still stick with that there is no such thing as "common sense" and only cultural norms. I never said I know more then everyone else...just that alot of people seem to talk alot about something they know nothing about. People do this alot.
