Is being fat your genes's fault?

There's been a few posts about fat/large/voluptuous women recently, so I was wondering what you thought of the following article. Won't post opinion yet so as not to bias the thread prematurely...

<recent addition> I think we should also like to hear from those who are currently struggling w/your weight or are w/someone who is. Not to flame you (be nice, ppl) but b/c I believe there are other reasons besides lifestyle & genes... "Speak" up!!

i don't really believe that being fat is based upon a trait. it's more so lifestyle. usually fat parents tend to have bad habits, which their children pick up. hey my dad and both my grandfathers loved to drink so it's only natural that i also turn into an alcohol loving drunk, right??

Actually somethings as far as fat/body type is very gene related, but yesh your lifestyle is still the biggest part.

Innova----I was just thinking, generalising here....affluent countries seem to produce really fat people or stick insects. Poorer countries have more normal looking people. Food for thought.

I don't think it is gene related at all, that link should be quite convincing. Technology has made life easy. The growing amount of office jobs and factories that demand physical work are dissappearing is 1 cause. I've been overweight before(I'm 5'9"), I weighed 210 lbs when I was 17, when I got a physically demanding job at 18 I dropped the weight, went down to 145 lbs. I'm a tone 165 now. I have an over weight mother and an overweight sister, and my mothers side of the family...all her sisters are overweight except one....the one that is the most ambitious. 1 of her brothers is over weight...the laziest. Like Illusional said, fat parents have bad eating habits. If they cook their own meals they cook every piece of fat they can to give it more taste. Feeding it to the children, of course they will get big.

Obesity is controllable, this gene BS is just a cry for sympathy so it will make it "ok" to keep stuffing your face.

actually genes do determine how a person's body type will be, but too many people use that as an excuse not to exercise. and OV, i'm about 95 pounds of pure muscle.
