To text or not to text?

Hello all,
I went out on my first date with a guy on Monday. He was quite quiet, seemed REALLY nervous and I was on the fence about how it went.
Have not heard any word from him since - I was wanting to give it a second date, just so I knew either way.
I am unsure whether to text him and try to get a feel for what is going on, however half of me is saying that if he was interested he would get in touch, however the other half thinks he was so shy and reserved, maybe he is just nervous.
HOWEVER I have always been brought up to follow 'the rules'- (for those who know what I mean, please forgive me!) and wait for him to get in touch, so i am unsure.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated xx

Jeez. Just text the poor guy. It's not like you're declaring undying love for him. It's just a bloody text.
Oh and that rule? Well, according to a friend of a friend who saw something on the internet the texting rule goes like this:

It's OK for a woman to text a man IF and only IF she was born on a Tuesday OR is a Sagitarrius OR has an allergy to broccoli. Otherwise the rule says that you have to wait for him to text you.
But then I spoke to another friend who heard from a friend of a friend who said that it's all complete BULLSHITE.
